    Things about the new ep:
    1. Enigma's user still reminds me of Marik from Yu-Gi-Oh, but in a good way
    2. The little sight gag of Rohan unintentionally dancing a bit of Thriller while trying to shake off Cheap Trick
    3. Try to catch the moment of extra quality Crazy D as he gets captured by Enigma
    4. Fungami Yuuya is good for something besides getting the snot comically beat out of him by Josuke
    5. Koichi standing behind Josuke making a cool tough guy face but he somehow gets fewer lines than his own Stand. Poor Koichi

I would just like to state for the record that I wrote a 3000 word essay for my university class on how Phantom Blood can be read as a gothic novel, and Dio as a character who is aware that he exists in a story structured like an 18th century gothic novel, and just got it back with an A-

I am so here for any and all attempts to overthink the themes and structure of JJBA. Is there any way I might read this essay?

    BITES THE DUST HAS ARRIVED
WE'RE IN THE HOME STRETCH, FOLKS
Enjoy everyone looking handsomer than they have in a while and also the emotional pain as Kawajiri Hayato, Boy Detective, continues to suffer horribly.

I have finally started Steel Ball Run and I am fascinated by Johnny Joestar. So fascinated, in fact, that I somehow ended up browsing videos from Kentuckian YouToubers, the better to get the full effect of what his accent sounds like.
Y'all. He's a hillbilly. He's a bitchy hillbilly in star-spangled jammies who probably says "dinosaur" with four syllables. I am delighted.
I don't think I'm even halfway through this surreal Western fantasy (Mormon???) road trip adventure and already I doubt I could describe it if someone asked me to. Fuckin' A, folks. Fuckin' A.

@paintcat omfg yes!!! I love Johnny and his awful Kentucky accent. I can't find the post right now but my favorite one on the subject goes something like this

Johnny: Gyro! Diego turned into some kind of weird dog!
    Gyro: He's a dinosaur, Johnny
Johnny: Damnit Gyro you know I don't speak Italian!

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!Excited art nerd noises!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This chapter cover is an homage to American watercolor painter Bev Doolittle! A very American artist for this most star-spangled of JoJos.

With bonus Super Conspicuous Gyro, who apparently feels he's exempt from this exercise since he's not from around here.

GOOD, I need people I can talk SBR with. I just finished it yesterday and am kinda reeling from all the everything.
I have Thoughts about Johnny's dad showing up there at the end.
I feel like it's just validating his "well done, son" complex in a way that doesn't address the fact that his whole problem with his dad was that his dad only valued him in the context of doing good at horse racing, so having him come in and say he's proud of Johnny for doing good in a horse race doesn't actually fix anything! Like, wouldn't a better resolution to that whole thing be more focused around showing that Johnny's found a sense of self-worth outside of 1. trying to impress his jerk dad 2. collecting holy relics 3. magically becoming able-bodied?

Johnny's arc actually hasn't quite ended by the end of SBR, but he does ultimately get over his selfishness when he
trades his life for that of his son in order to cure his deadly illness, dying tragically young in the process.

That being said, yes, the dad thing was kind of just a shoed-in way to callback to George's reconciliation with Jonathan in Phantom Blood.

Oh, that was supposed to be a callback? I think I glossed over the dad stuff in Phantom Blood too :P Kinda only cared about JonaDio's story and Speedwagon being cute, whoops.
I really like Johnny's flaws. I'm not gonna read the spoiler because I haven't into Part 8 yet, but I hope he doesn't become a mild-mannered family man or anything. I want him to keep his tenacity and sarcasm at the very least. I like him as a sharp-tongued murderkitten.
...I will accept him growing up into a wily cantankerous old bastard with a hilarious accent. I dearly hope he gets to make more good friends, though. Gyro isn't enough.

One of the other things that kinda fucks with SBR's narrative was that it was originally pitched as a horse racing series with a mild call back to JJBA in the form of the names, which is why the stand stuff takes so long to really start happening - he waited until Jump gave him a serial publishing deal before he broke out the jojo stuff.

So yeah, Hence why Johnnys blatant Phantom Blood reference backstory doesnt really happen until later on.

Recent entry to the Jojo fandom calling in. I've recently gotten past Battle Tendency.

Jonathan gets way too little attention as a character, I loved that guy. Joseph was great, though, even if some of his stunts were a little too asspully for my tastes.

Looking forward to seeing how Jotaro stacks up.

Jonathan works especially well in the context of manga at the time - he was blatantly based off of other hyperbuff shonen heroes like Kenshiro or Devilman, but unlike them he's a fundamentally optimistic, friendly man rather than being a jaded anti-hero.

But yes it is a thing that each successive jojo in some way subverts or plays with the traits of the preceding jojo

Johnathan's a nice chivalrous rich boy who lives and dies for his friends. Joseph is a rude brash pervert that is nonetheless fiercely defensive over his friends.
Jotaro is a gruff delinquent with a gentle heart, less prone to being loud and aggravating while being no less tricksy and focused on his family.

Hey! I'm in episode 8 of Stardust Crusaders (the Singapore episode, just after the one with Strength, the orangutan), would anyone be interested in thoughts as I'm watching the thing?
