when yuuri says "I thought the same thing when he watched Yurio earlier, but..." What is he referring to? Is it something explicit that I'm missing or?

    @iff I wondered that too.
@KathyGaele Oh hey, I was confused about Yuuri's behavior in the after-credits scene but your analysis clarified it for me. (owo)b

  11. Wow, they made me actually care about JJ. That's pretty impressive.

Not, like, I've become a fan, but they made him human! Rather than just "arrogant guy who is there to arrogant at everyone", we saw that arrogance crack, and he completely bombed but kept skating anyway. And I really liked how his fans kept cheering and singing for him, and were heartbroken rather than disgusted.

(The scoring was way whack, though. Yuuri put a hand down on his last quad; JJ crashed and burned and had triples and quads turn into singles, and yet only 10 points between them?)

Yeah, I actually felt some sympathy for JJ. Also saw the similarity to Jack Zimmerman for the first time. Poor guy. Interesting that it was seeing Otabek that psyched him out.

i'm pretty sure he noticed how it was fucking victor up to watch his world record get destroyed before his eyes as by these incredibly young prodigies

like, yuuri's reactions are more expressive and attention-grabbing, but pay attention to victor's face throughout the episode. the dude is on the verge of a breakdown, but is hiding it to protect his image

okay, time to finally watch this episode, LET'S LIVEBLOG

VICTOR JUMPING TOO, god, these two....so cute.....

uh oh....Yuuri's not looking so good.

    YUURI....HONEY.....the little tears in Victor's eyes...OH MAN

I always get such second hand embarrassment over "Shall We Skate" but Phichit always so cute. LIL' HAMSTERS

I love the Agape routine so much more than Eros, I love Yuri's outfit! I love the music! So much better!

(Vitya with long hair = kill me, he's too pretty)

GODDAMN, YURIO, YOU'RE SO GOOD? A beautiful monster indeed. SMASH THAT WORLD RECORD.

Victor, what is your DEAL. Regretting getting out of the game?

oh god, time to watch some more Swiss o-face I bet

LOL YURI, your tsundere friendship is adorable

    TINY BALLET YURI, CUTE

Victor, your smile mask is WEARING THIN AS YOUR HAIR

oh great, King JJ's theme. e_e

LOL I love how evil Yuuri looks in JJ's vision. But I kind of feel having him succumb to pressure NOW when he hasn't shown any issues with pressure before feels sort of...last minute? Like oh shit, how do we make this unstoppable monster lose.

Okay it's adorable how supportive his fiancee is and all but the LAST THING WE NEED is to patch up his ego, THIS IS GOOD FOR HIM, PEOPLE, EVERYONE CALM DOWN.

    Like....same, Yurio. Same.

Ep 11 should be up on Crunchyroll, too, although I'm not sure it's currently available for non-members - they usually gate that stuff a bit.

I'm not sure if you're referring to Yurio, Yuri, or Victor, but: basically, figure skating is one of those things that's really hard on the body. So there's only so long the skaters can participate in the competitive arena before they either 1) can't keep up with the younger skaters or 2) get sidelined by an injury that makes it impossible for them to keep competing. Victor is approaching the point where people are going to be expecting him to step down, and he wasn't showing any signs of actually getting ready to do that before he zipped off to go coach Yuri; the thing is, having essentially stopped his career to go do that at this point means that no one's seriously expecting he's going to return to competitive skating after this - the assumption is that he's getting too old for it and he's found a way to gracefully step down without making it look like he's really retiring.

Yuri is at the point where he should be reaching the top of his game, provided he doesn't get a career-ending injury.

Yurio's career is, basically, just beginning! This is his senior debut - the season where he shows what he can do on the adult stage, instead of in the junior division where he would've been competing against kids who would've been about 15 or 16 at the oldest. There's a lot of expectations on him now, especially since Victor's left the stage as a skater, and he's at the point where he's about to go through some major body changes that mean he's going to have to entirely rework how he performs. He's also supposed to be being careful to not stress his body too much so that he has a reasonably-long career - that's why he was forbidden from doing quads at all during his junior competitions, the stress from the impacts would've been too much for him and would've significantly shortened his career as a competitive skater.

As it's been explained to me: everyone gets to compete in a maximum of two out of the six events. You have to medal in at least one of the two events you compete in, and you need to score high in both events in order to be considered for the Grand Prix.

It's probably not random - the first event seems to be "what's the closest one to you that you qualify for" (this is why Yuri goes to the Cup of China, after qualifying in the Japanese competition - the Cup of China is for the skaters who're from Asian countries), and I think the second one is "okay, what's the next-closest one" (which is why one of the competitors at the Rostelcom Cup is from America and one's from Canada - they did their local qualifiers, and then went on to the next-closest).

I suspect that your country is expected to help pay at least some of the cost for travelling, but how much of a stipend you get towards that depends heavily on how well you've done in previous events. (There's probably a reason why Yuri is travelling in economy while Victor's used to being in first class, is what I'm saying.) It looks bad on your country if you have to decline attending an out-of-country event because you can't afford to travel for it, after all. But there's probably also other unstated qualifications such as "okay, you're legally allowed into the country where the event's being held, right? and you're not wanted for anything?"

It's apparently a thing for the Cup of China, yes! My guess is, it's easier for the audience there to buy plushies than it is for them to buy flowers, given that the events are taking place during winter.

I wanna see her skate too!

Augh, I know, right? And I'm happy for her that she's going "okay, no, you're going to stop doing this, this is not okay and I do not have to put up with it" because her brother is getting really creepy. (I'm...not impressed with him, that he's immediately ignoring the boundary she set of "you don't get to show up to my event, you're not even allowed in the audience because I know you will show up at the kiss-and-cry and be a creepy jerk".)

Yup! Yuri had to medal in one event and place at least fourth in the second in order to qualify for the Grand Prix.

Either Chris brought it, or it was already there - apparently strip joints rent out their halls for stuff like this!

He totally does not have enough to pay for it in a lump sum, no. Fortunately, he's smart enough to know that Victor won't be impressed by him driving himself into debt, which is why he's saying he'll pay for it in installments.

I don't think anyone realized that he was so drunk he didn't remember anything the next day - his behaviour wasn't significantly different from what they'd expect the next day, after all!

It is, yeah! I'm really happy that all their friends are very supportive. <3

    THEORY TIME

I think Victor misses being in the ring, and seeing all these skaters giving it their all, their hearts laid bare, and GROWING from their failures, becoming polished, has made Victor realize how secretly stagnant he's been. Now thanks to his time with Yuuri, he realizes what's been missing in his own skating, and watching Yurio especially might have reminded him of how he was so long ago.

And Yuuri KNOWS this, can sense Victor's regret, and that's why he wants to end this. He wants Victor to go back to skating, even if it means their happy time together ends.

    ADDITIONALLY!

From the very start their relationship has been tilted, unequal. Victor was Yuuri's hero for so long, and now he's his coach, a position of authority. Their love is never going to last unless they're on equal footing, and the only way for that to happen is for them to skate against each other. And the only way for Victor to go back to skating is for Yuuri to tell him to stop coaching him.
