I went to the signing on Friday! (And forgot everything I wanted to actually ask about, thanks anxiety) Spoiler: LL1 reactions under cut I'm really unimpressed by the art. The cartoony style wouldn't be too bad if it didn't also come with a huge drop in detail, but panels like Drift's vision and the reveal of Cybertron just look really flat and unimpressive. Also no one seems to have any weight which usually wouldn't bother me too much but since this is a comic about giant robots it seems really incongruous. I'm liking Anode and Lug! Interesting that they know Velocity but consider Cybertron home. I wonder if they're neutrals who fled the war and ended up on Caminus or something like that. Fangry has the best name, even if his plans are terrible and probably going to get him killed. Roller looks unusually happy to be picked up by Tailgate when he's always worried about being overshadowed by outliers before. Wasn't Drift trying to convert Rodimus before he left? I think this is more an attempt to reconnect rather than Rodimus being sincere about the religion. Also,how common is Spectralism as a belief? Or are the colour associations something that everyone would know as a cultural thing? I just really don't think it's a coincidence that Overlord has a paint job that means "I will hunt you down and kill you" Terminus is adorable, but he needs telling before Rewind gets his greatest hits of the war video back out. Who would be able to give an unbiased account of the war anyway? Nautica? Cyclonus? What's going on with Rung? I think the last time we saw a character throwing up like that was Cyclonus in the dead universe, but this pretty clearly something different. Speaking of Cyclonus, why is he so off model compared to everyone else. Why~~ That's a lot of sparkeaters. I wonder if the gear guys have thir own means of creating them or if they got hold of the gun somehow? Still, it's foreshadowing a Rod Squad/ Scavengers team up and the return of Pharma and I have been waiting for both of those things for too long. I think that's the first use of the autobot script in the comic - it's either been old cybertronian or English up until now. I'm have no idea whether or not that's relevant. They left Cyclonus in charge? I guess he's not the worst choice, but since Tailgate is apparently planning a rampage this could go very badly. (It's also kind of odd that out of the entire cast Btainstorm, Tailgate and Megatron are the only ones not in mourning. Tailgate I can kind of see because he wasn't particularly close to either Skids or Ravage and he hasn't seemed to realise the impact of the battle yet, but the others were pretty close to them) Are cybertronian pints the same as imperial ones? Chromedome's got no tolerance either way, but. (I'm not touching the Starscream comment. I just hope Spock's right about that one) And they're in the Functionist Universe. It could have been worse - they could have taken Whirl with them. Jokes aside, did the teleport take them there or was it the bomb? Because something happened when it went off. (also, I'm pretty sure flathead Dominus is still alive) Overall I agree that this issue tried to do too much? Most of the other big arcs in mtmte have ended with a quieter issue dedicated to the character's reactions, but you can't really start a new series like that even though Dying of the Light really needed it. And I can't really get over the art. But it is a reboot and I'm willing to give it a bit of slack for that.
Also I am now really sad about Whirl. Thanks. (I'm not sure what my favourite part was - the descriptions of the watches, his reaction to the shakedown, or the whole [not hands] but it was just generally excellent and thank you but I hate you now)
Yesssss, everything that was done with [brackets] in the fic was so good, all the stuff about language and connotation and all that. It really made me feel the xeno of the setting, but in a really identifiable (and heartbreaking) way. Spoiler: LL1 I think the only one who could do it is probably Cyclonus. Nautica and most of the other Camiens, they seem like... sheltered isn't exactly the right word, but kind of that. They've had pretty peaceful lives, and it seems like the first partisan to make an emotional case against the other side tends to win them over, if that makes sense? Nautica and company were picked up by Thunderclash, and probably got a good combo dose of autobot ideals and decepticon atrocities. Especially since it looks like Nautica's been reading history books, and the first ones she was recommended were probably very partisan texts. Cyclonus was going in this direction with Tailgate for like, two minutes, but I can also see him not wanting to spend all the time it would take to do that thing. Though tbh, I'd LOOOOOVE some brotp fic with him and Terminus, I want to see how their personalities mesh up sooo so so bad. Rung might be able to recognize his own biases and distance himself enough to give a relatively balanced account, and he's such a helpy person that I could totally see him doing it. Or Megatron, maybe, now that he's done a philosophical 180 and can look back on his own decisions without necessarily agreeing with what past!megatron did. Plus he's a natural educator (professor megatron at the new iaconian university, i wants it) and he's the only real personal connection Terminus has got here. The emotional conflict over having to break down all the horrible shit he contributed to, though, ahhhhhhhhhh :3c OH SHIT. I didn't even think of this. Oh my goddddddd. I loved what issue 50-whatever did with Dominus, but it still felt like the emotional climax of that arc was a little rushed and we got a good look at what Chromedome was feeling (I will never ever ever be over him crying when he realizes who's on the operating table, and telling rewind that he can have dominus instead of him), but we don't get nearly as much of a look in Rewind's head. Plus Rewind has already experienced having the memories of this universe. And if the council has wiped dominus's vocabulary still, it's another situation like the pet, where he's alive, but he can't communicate. Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, Rung is quietly falling apart and I'm really worried for him? Starting with the visit from Froid in 48, where Froid brings up how Rung was ruled unfit to practice, and he's gone on doing it anyways. Then there's Rung saying that he won't be treating people anymore. When they're on the necrobot's planet and Nightbeat wants to investigate the hollow center, well He's not able to help, he doesn't have any way to be particularly useful, when he wants to go back to at least help with the fight, Nightbeat pretty much brushes him off (yes, time has gone all wonky, but he's also not really listening to much that Rung says, he's too caught up in the mystery). Nobody thinks to let him know about what happened to Skids. And just the last couple of issues, these faces he's making are breaking my heart :( He perks up every so often, like the pale marriage, but he keeps sinking back down again. Everything in the comic is a hectic mess, so people aren't really in a good position to notice he's struggling, plus he's usually the one to untangle problems, not the one to have problems himself. I'm worried :C
