Off-topic, but I'm going "!!!!!! :::DDD" over here because Steven Brust.

(My favorite random derail in The Phoenix Guards is the aside about the etymology of "Bengloaraford Ford." And the chapter titled "In Which The Plot, Behaving In Much The Same Manner As A Soup To Which Cornstarch Has Been Added, Begins, At Last, To Thicken.")

(For anyone curious about Bengloaraford: the name means, in four different languages, "Ford ford ford ford ford." Eventually they just got fed up and built a bridge instead.)

Morven In darkness be the sound and light

    Named the Bengloaraford Bridge, naturally.

I love The Phoenix Guards; Alana hates it. Basically it's whether or not you like Dumas, because it's basically written by the in-universe Dumas substitute with a similar love for digressions.

Basically it's The Three Musketeers but in Dragaera, Brust's fantasy world. I found it hilarious.

i change my url for the holidays, fandom events, and when i find one i like more than the one i had before.

i also have a "was A-url, B-url, and C-url" in my about, and i put a redirect code for all my old urls so there aren't broken links. i dont know how reliable the redirect is on mobile, but it works well on desktop. changing urls is definitely a tactic that antis use to escape responsibility but in my experience most of the time people i know change urls is because they find one they like better.

I am filled with petty, pedantic rage at this but I don't want to clog up Seebs' inbox with my tantrum, so I just want to say:

Has this person ever tried being a booby person and doing anything remotely athletic while NOT wearing a bra.

    Uncontained bouncing boobs FRIGGING HURT.

hhhhhh as a trans-masc person, i wear a sports bra AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE, i literally only take it off to sleep or shower.

for me, wearing just a bra + underwear is still better than, say, wearing shirt, underwear, pants, but no bra. if i am not either about to sleep or about to get wet, you better believe i'm wearing a fucking sports bra

(note: i do not own a binder)

I haven't seen the art in question and don't particularly want to because sexy art is Not My Thing, but also, pre-freeze Steve probably wouldn't have access to a binder at all. They wouldn't exist on a large scale until he got defrosted. So his options to avoid bounce and reduce boob in the 40s would be 1) underwear designed for women or 2) trying to bind with bandages or cloth or something.

@roach I'm not on tumblr but I can answer your color question! If you pass light through a diffraction grating and look at the spectrum, it fades to black at both ends. There's light there, it's just not triggering the photoreceptors in your eyes.

The violet on the farthest perceptible blue end of the spectrum is this weird eye-sucking shade that your brain almost refuses to process as a color. It's like a headache in light form.

There isn't a clear "last" wavelength of violet or red because human eyes are different and some people can see a little farther into the UV or IR than others. Visible light is usually defined as 400nm-700nm, but I had classmates who could still clearly see spectral lines out to 800nm or more.

Edit: I just realized it is possibly not normal to be nauseated by the memory of a color? And I sound kind of like Brainbent!Nepeta, declaring purple to be the Satan Color? That may be just me. So I'm asking for additional anecdata: if you've taken a physics or chemistry class where looking at spectral lines for elements was a thing you did, what is your opinion of the Ca II H and K lines?

"Weird eye-sucking not-color" sounds about right, but it was actually incredibly comfortable for me. Like... the visual equivalent of the physical feel of being underwater? Pressure, but good pressure. what are words, how do I describe sensory input

I've used a number of sites like this that compile a lot of people's personal information. What they generally do to get their information is search a whole lot of public records- stuff like voter registries and publicly-available phone books. But this means there's often a lot of weirdness or errors if somebody's info isn't in the sources they're looking for or there are other people with similar names that the algorithm detects. And it looks like this one doesn't have very good records- I searched my name, and it doesn't have me, has my mom's name wrong, and hasn't noticed that my grandpa has been dead for ten years.

    @jacktrash Dreams anecdata!
I am an autistic person without PTSD and, while a lot of my dreams are just fuzzy messes of bizarre, I sometimes get very tactile, clear dreams-or very clear dreams that aren't very tactile at all.

Generally the 'very clear but not tactile' ones are lucid dreams, where I take a third-person observer role and just mess around. Sometimes those proceed to try to derail into bizarre, which results in dream!me saying things like "STOP TURNING INTO BEARS AND JUMPING IN PLACE! You guys are all supposed to be wolves!" or "Stop wearing the molecule and go back to being a proper Coelophysis!". If it's first-person, then it'll have tactile bits.

However, I do sometimes get non-lucid dreams that are very clear, very coherent, and not very tactile-like the locket!Chara dream, which made so much sense that I could probably just transcribe everything that happened into a coherent fic.

And then there's the nonlucid, tactile dreams-these usually have me having a nonhuman body plan, and most of the tactileness is proprioception of that body plan. So, when I'm a bird, I can generally feel my tail and how the feathers interact with the air and such. And when I have horns, I can feel when I bonk them on the doorframe or whatever. But textures and stuff are somewhat muted. It is very weird. These dreams are not usually sensible or coherent, although they usually have an overlying 'plot'. These don't have a correlation between third/first-person POV and tactileness, and are also almost always in third-person.

I don't usually dream in first-person. Not sure if that's normal or not.

(The Coelophysis, by the way, wasn't just randomly turning into a human and wearing a monocle. It was repeatedly switching to standing upright like a penguin, while wearing stereotypical Victorian gentleman clothes-suit, top hat, cane, monocle. It wasn't supposed to be wearing anything, it was a bit-part animal! I got so mad at it repeatedly turning into Victorian WereCoelophysis that I woke up.)

Dunno if this anon will see this, but I call that "brainspiders." I get the whole shebang aside from the lisping- something stresses me out, and I just feel generally awful and my executive function takes a nosedive. I've had at least one mental health person label it as anxiety despite the lack of any active fear/panic.

i have tumblr giving me pop-up notifications of seebs' posts and 'cause the notifications don't show the asks he gets in full, i sometimes end up trying to guess what kind of ask they are and fail utterly. i expected "you don't like our current dystopian government but" to be a hateful ask (and was offended on seebs' behalf), not a punny one (and now i'm not offended on his behalf).

Just saw Seebs reply to this joke post about the Amish and wanted to put in two cents without having to reblog the horribly tasteless OP. Amish people don't go on the internet once they've formally joined the church, as far as I know, but there's a time right around when they're...18, I think, where at least some sects of Amish people allow those kids/new adults (depending on what you think of 18yos) to basically go out into the world and experience all the things that they won't be able to if they decide to commit to an Amish lifestyle, and it's a normal thing. If they come back and commit to the church everyone's cool. That may well be where seebs' website visitor came from. Alternately, the person could have been ex-Amish, because people do leave the church, either after that period or at a different point.

Also, a lot of Amish communities are finding insular, self-sustained farming kinda difficult economically and are turning to capitalizing on tourism in order to support themselves and their lifestyle. So I assure anyone who's curious, yes, some Amish, at least, have seen people who've had plastic surgery. Even the ones not involved in tourist business do shop at grocery stores, which are also often full of a wide variety of tourists (tourists being more likely than locals to have had plastic surgery, since most Amish communities are in less affluent rural areas with less access to plastic surgery in the first place).

As a final note, I went on vacation near one of the Amish communities in the US and ended up on a buggy tour (Mom thought my sister would like the buggy ride; Mom was wrong). According to the tour guide, an Amish man for whom this was a retirement job, some of the other Amish in town were considering putting up solar panels, which I personally find very interesting.
