What Can I Say Except 'You're Welcome?' (Disney's Moana, SPOILERS WITHIN)

  1. Erica

Erica occasionally vaguely like a person

i wish it was industry standard to have the voice actors sing the demo songs too
    just for the soundtrack

no seriously i would probably sell my soul to hear auli'i cravalho sing the reprise of 'more'

ALSO I AM SO HAPPY ABOUT EVERYTHING TO DO WITH MAUI, BIG BOISTEROUS STOCKY CHARACTERS WITH NONGENERIC FACES WHO AREN'T JUST THERE TO BE THREATENING OR COMIC RELIEF JUST <333333

oh, probably! there were definitely some issues with pacing that stood out to me, personally, but it's a testament to how good everything else is that it was so frickin moving anyway, because usually pacing problems are the number one thing that kills a movie's impact for me

also YES HOLY SHIT HER SINGING IS FANTASTIC AND FEELS LIKE HAVING SOMEONE LOVINGLY SQUISH YOUR HEART WITH THEIR FIST

    AHHH I LOVED THIS MOVIE

    IT'S SO GOOD

and I LOVE moana's design, especially since she is the only character aside from mother gothel to have hair similar to mine! And it's basically collateral representation since my whole family is from east Europe but it's still nice.

Also the ANIMATION in this, damn. I found the art book once, it's really fascinating, they talk about how the villager clothes are more brown to symbolize how they've been in one place, but also more detailed ans embroidered than the sailor tribe (who mostly had green plants and such), since they have the time for that.

Also moana's ancestor that we see leading is apparently called Matai Vasa, if I remember right? So that's neat.

The soundtrack is incredible and this is the first princess song in YEARS that I have had a visceral connection to. Usually I would wait and not spoil the fiance unit at all until he'd seen it himself, but I showed him You're Welcome because it was stuck in my head and at least that way he could also appreciate The Rock's performance (I'm still so proud of him) and I don't know if the plan is to see it in theaters or whether he's waiting until it comes out on DVD/Blu-ray bc there is no way I am not purchasing this as soon as humanly possible. but yes. good movie. It was SO NICE to have an adventure princess have a supportive mom from the get-go of the adventure. MY HEART.

a thing i actually found really impressive about this movie: the sand and water

sand seems like it would be HORRENDOUS to try to render and animate in a way that looks nice and well. Like sand.

Water is water. Water is suffering in almost every media.

I'm just really really impressed with the visuals of this movie, it's so pretty

Oh god yeah. It was amazing to see how far 3d animation has come tbh!

I used to be super lukewarm on it, but it's starting to really catch me, especially with this movie

I keep longing for more of that implied backstory on Tamatoa. He knows all this shit about Maui and his insecurities? Maui was so completely certain he'd have the hook? What went down, movie?!

That's one of the things I like about the world building in the story. There's a lot of work put into making Maui seem like an established hero with his own history and stories and the Tamatoa encounter really hammered that home as an actual reality. Like here's this fucking asshole crab that knows him and we only get bits of what went down between them. It's just enough info for it to seem real, but it's only just enough.

It'd be neat to learn more about that in something else. And some of his other stories. Like in comics or something!

of the awe-inspiringly ridiculous yaoi(-styled) comics that have sprung up in the tags in the wake of this movie i find myself frankly saddened that they couldn't even be mauatoa (or. actually yaoi for that matter)

i reckon the movie was helped a lot in its establishment of maui as an established hero with his own history and stories 'cause he - and a lot of the story come from polynesian mythology. 'cause the creators of the movie didn't have to come up with everything while making the movie. they could use what was already there. like, moana was made, in some ways, more like a fanfic than like original fiction. i don't whether i'd outright call it a fanfiction but i think it comes at least close to qualifying one. and it being (like) a fanfic means it can have and does have the strengths of fanfic, that it can draw on things in ways similar to how fanfic does.

and i love the tamatoa encounter. :D the way he serves as a foil to maui, and the encounter brings out the theme of Making Identity And Pride Out of External Things, and how the lights change when he gets deep into maui's insecurities, and how he exposes maui's true self and weaknesses and just... breaks him.

and maui's awesome. i love that he's a (bit of a) prideful asshole, has done bad things, has good intentions and deep-seated issues that he hides. he has a complexity to him that feels real and captivating.

    it's a really good movie! :D:D:D:D
i'm now very curious about those comics. do you have any links?
now i'm interpreting his lines about the fish in shiny in a whole new way. 'cause, like, there is the common expression, "a lot of fish in the sea," you know... and i think it's the shininess tamatoa uses to attract mates, not the claws. :P at least by my new interpretation of those lyrics, anyway.

    basically:

    fish = people/potential mates
fish dinner = success at getting laid, getting dates

so, in translation, tamatoa's shiny attracts people to him 'cause they're dumb or shallow and that means he gets laid/dates/both
i haven't seen that pic but... wow

that's one hella ooc tamatoa they've got there
