What Can I Say Except 'You're Welcome?' (Disney's Moana, SPOILERS WITHIN)

I love tamatoa getting all biolum-y. biolum is just one of my favorite things in general so it showing up all over the place (the underwater lair, in the wakes of the ships/granny manta ray, just in the way the ghosts look) was REALLY cool.

 

TAMATOA'S NOT THE ONLY ONE MAUI GETS IN ON THE WEEPY DAMSEL ACTION TOO IT'S INCREDIBLE

i think pretty much the only points it gets from me is having moana be the Generic Hotblooded Anime Protagonist and decidedly not weepy or a damsel at all but holy shit, holy shit, yaoi-faced maui getting teary-eyed at the drop of a hat is probably one of the funniest things i have ever seen in my life

i'm a little conflicted about linking it here just because brain says 'NOOOOOO YOU'RE INCITING HARASSMENT' because i really don't want them to get shit for it or anything, just show it to people because it is my joy and sunshine

also agreed to the above meta! External Chosen Markers of Identity is a fantastic theme that doesn't get explored often enough at all, much less in Disney movies :000

 

Ooh, you reminded me- is it just me or did the alternating thing T's glowy-eyes were doing there at the end of the song feel kind of Kaa-like to anyone else? Because I very much got that vibe for some reason.

Also speaking of external markers, i AM a little disappointed Moana didn't have any new tattoos during the ending scene! idk if it was a cultural reason or a 'we can't have a princess with tattoos' thing, but it did seem like it'd make sense, what with the 'they show up when i earn them' and moana leaving the shell and essentially becoming leader, so... idk.

 

you're definitely allowed to like it unironically! the artstyle does improve as it goes along, definitely, and it's legitimately really impressive that they've made so much of it in such a short amount of time, and i wish them fun making it and their followers fun reading it; it's just got a lot of things that personally stand out to me as really, really narmy and out-of-character, so i think it's hilarious, but i ain'ta judge if anyone does like it!

huh! personally i just kind of assumed the appearing tattoos were a demigod thing, so it didn't stick out to me as weird that moana didn't get any, but dangit that would have actually been pretty cool :0

 

Oh, no, I mean I wasn't expecting Moana to get demigod tattoos, it's just that with that line it seemed like they were setting up the tattoos as a Thing You Get For Being Heroic, and Moana's actions in the finale definitely qualify, so I'd have expected her to get some for that, except with ink and normal methods instead of magic.

 

i was just drastically surprised by the contrast between what i saw and what i was imagining from your description. :D i'm not saying you're wrong and honestly, i haven't entirely formed an opinion yet (and won't until i'm less confused, honestly) but yeah, i was just really, really surprised.
