"They're vampires, but they're nice." Mabel shrugs. "They had to fight the bad ones. I still want to know how that works out. You can't tell me that fourth book is all of the story just because the romance part is done. Not when there are all those evil vampires out there that want to wipe all of the other ones out unless they follow their rules."

As someone who has spent a great deal of her life in a theocratic pseudo-democratic aristocracy with heavy classism, then fought her way up in a military meritocracy and has recently become quite fond of the recent attempts at actual democracy I have to ask:
Is there a particular reason you, someone I've been told is a highly influential and affluent person considered part of the intellectual elite and joined in vows to a feudal lady, opposes a purely democratic approach to government, aside from fear you may lose your own position or a patronising delusion that obviously you know what's best for millions of individuals?

 

Ford fistbumps back. "Riki has taught me to say 'same hat' at moments like these. I have been really hard on Valiska before I got wise, and even harder on my brother. I sometimes feel I don't deserve this family at all. And you know how it goes. Two steps forward, one step back."

"I'm trying to figure out how best to implement it, in the setting of continual attempts by a larger plutocracy to restore themselves to power through the previous political elites who were voted in by wealthy people. We had to throw out a so-called 'democratic' government that tried to sell us out to the Cereuti Conglomerate in order to maintain our independence. I've been one of the instruments used by a plutocracy before, and the results of it still haunt me. I know you're fond of philosophical debates, and so am I at times, but...I would have to give you a very long history lesson with regard to the Cereuti Conglomerate and its habit of buying governments and subsuming other cultures into itself, which never ends well."

He sighs, irritated. "And then there was the whole Reagan business, none of which I am proud of, but they had us over a barrel. You're seeing new democracy in action, and you're in a honeymoon period. I hope to G-d you do it right and don't end up like my America did, or worse yet, Sev's. Or G-d forbid, the Cereuti. What I've seen is the failure state of democracy paired with laissez-faire economics, and it's easy to get people to vote for those policies by convincing them it's better for them when it isn't. Organics often have a perspective problem and think in the very short term. I can't honestly say I believe in any form of government other than 'whatever happens to be working well right now for the largest number of people'. Right now we have free access to health care and education and nobody is allowed to starve in the street unless they're determined to do so. We don't have wage slavery any more. We've got rid of most of our organised crime. I don't want to believe that this is as good as it gets. Ad astra per aspera. I believe we will get to a more equitable situation. But we have a few very serious problems to deal with first, including at least one interdimensional invasion."

 

"Course not." Valiska grins at him. "But only kits make that gesture at things that aren't meant to be played with."

 

Only the other organic was trying, and I'm more fluent in Scanner-jetfuel than he is. Was? I don't think he's here right now. [Eclipse sizes back up to Venture's height-- still smaller than he normally is, but no longer human-scale-- and leans against the other jet. Their fingers twist together automatically, and those used to letting the Rave translate may be able to read as he signs:]

To be entirely fair, the shipwide democracy is with a comparatively small population, and anything can work well on a small scale. I'm pretty sure we're all still waiting for the... frag, what even are we now, are we still an empire? Empire-scale democracy to fail, much as we might hope differently.
