I've travelled through many dimensions even though I chose to make my home on Pennarion. The combination of hypercapitalism and popular democracy is almost always malignant. So is the combination of theocracy and militarism. That's existed on most Earths in the form of various Crusades, jihads, and other holy wars, particularly during periods where a religious bureaucracy had an emotional and intellectual stranglehold on a military or feudal temporal government. They're both really bad."

Ford sighs. "The problem on my Earth of origin was that there was a fusion between the military and the hypercapitalist complex and they decided to use religion to manipulate popular democracy. So after I got a bunch of grants from people I should've investigated more closely before taking their money--and after they found out I wasn't conducting my love life in the socially approved manner and had family members they had good excuses to lock up and throw away the key--I got dragged up to Area 51 and shown a whole lot of things that were beautiful and powerful, that could have done my world a lot of good, and they were all locked up because they were a threat to that hypercapitalist complex. And then I got shown what would happen to me if I didn't help them elect their chosen figurehead, who had been talking a really good game, but his mind was starting to go."

He glances down at his hands. "Of course everything I wanted to do was on the list of things that couldn't be allowed, and people like me were on their hit list. And people wonder why I made a deal with a demon."

 

Valiska takes his hand. "You didn't even believe in demons then. You thought he was an alien. And you had reason to believe, both because of the craft in the Falls and the things you saw in Nevada, that aliens would save your people from themselves if anyone could."

"Technically Stanford and I own several corporations on a local level, but the verb 'to Incorporate' when used with that particular intonation means to buy into the Cereuti Conglomerate as a Corpora."

"Pines was originally just the name of a family on Earth, but I fear it's becoming the name of a 'noble house'." Valiska sighs.

"Yes. That's the situation we are in. There were two of us when you met us; we've taken a third." Valiska grins.

Mabel thinks for a moment. "I should probably warn you that one of my girlfriends is named Oneira Eluvei and the other one is named Paz Malfoy. Because that doesn't mean what it would mean in your world. Paz isn't even a witch. She likes mini-golf, golf, dancing, horseback riding and tennis, and if she could ride a broom I'm sure she'd like Quidditch, but all she has in common with your Malfoys is evil rich parents with a yard full of peacocks, and she lives with us now. She's my pitch bitch, and she's got a mean sense of humour sometimes, but she's not actually evil and she doesn't go around killing Muggles or anything."

Ah- While teh functionalist senate had geared up for militarist tendencies it had not actually gotten properly militant.
The Decepticons, which I was talking of, are strictly atheistic. Organized religion is a tool to pacify the masses and lure them into quiet compliance.
