Yeah, they don't ever actually resolve a lot of the deep-seated issues (like the way all the Winchesters are willing to go "hey, a loved one is in terrible peril? Welp, time to go fall on this sword in the hopes that it saves them" and how neither of the boys seems to have much in the way of survival instincts left), they just keep rehashing it over and over. Like - yes, it's tragic and awful that Dean has manpain over basically their entire childhood and keeps dancing around acknowledging the fact that their dad was terrible at parenting them and that their childhood was Horrible, but...he never actually goes anywhere with it? (And on the one hand, it's probably realistic in that someone who's not doing therapy is gonna have a harder time healing from trauma and abuse, and that recovery isn't a straight line. But on the other hand, it's basically just perpetual grimdark with the occasional ray of hope, and the show almost always has that ray turn out to be an oncoming train. It's exhausting.)
It helps that pretty much every season has at least one straight up comedy episode (Hell House and Tall Tales are a couple of the best)
I left sometime in season 8 when I finally got sick of the queerbaiting. The last episode I enjoyed involved a golem. I realized the writers were going to keep deliberately teasing Dean/Castiel as long as possible without ever openly endorsing it, like a bunch of cowards. Sam sans soul was pretty hot. I liked Bela, I thought she had some fun belligerent sexual tension with Dean. The boys didn't respect her though. Ben Edlund wrote some extremely funny episodes.
is it sad that part of me, at the end of all this, when they dont get renewed for a new season, is still hopeful dean/castiel will be endgame. i got into the fandom very young and ignorant and only left bc, well, i got older and less ignorant, surprisingly enough, but that excited 13 year old is still praying for that ship tbh

Spoiler: yelling about The One Where Bobby Dies Look, if they'd just straight up WHAM killed him off nice and clean, that would have been one thing but no, they spent that WHOLE ENTIRE FUCKING EPISODE showing Bobby's soul fighting to STAY ALIVE and he wakes up and...writes down some numbers and lol nope nvm he's ded. FUCK YOU, SHOW ...yeah, I might still be extremely salty about this
