It's not so much paint as... removable plating, sort of? Not much armor to most of it that I've seen, at least in species that use organic fibers rather than good metal, but it serves roughly the same purpose as magnetic decoratives. And insulation in some cases, I think?

Anyway, yes, 'clothes' or 'clothing' is the right word.
