Dittos, tho, man

How are there even differently-coloured dittos if they can just
see what every other ditto looks like and just transform into that. they dont have trouble changing colour. and why are they strawberry bubblegum pink anyways? that is not a camouflage colour.

It seems like dittos need a model to transform, and can't just do it on their own, and also lapse back into blobs eventually, so that would limit some replacement shenanigans.

I think pokespe blue (the girl) has canonically used the ditto disguise and ditto lockpicks, though, along with the whole arm thing.

The pink might be warning coloration? Like, yeah, i've got everything you've got, best move along, hypothetical predator.

 

i recall a pokedex entry that states they transform into rocks during the night to protect themselves from predators

how far does the transformation go tho
they are able to copy stat changes and attacks. are they like, able to copy intellect
do they miss being clever when dropping that shape
or are they like, jawbreakers with a gummi centre

i wonder how long they can stay transformed
several hours at an end if that rock thing is in any way canon. maybe its related to the complexity of the transformation. a dragonite is difficult, a rock is esy.

 

I have to imagine that in the wild other Pokemon avoid ditto like the actual plague, unless they're looking to negotiate to make eggs for some reason
I can't imagine any wild Pokemon enjoying fighting an enemy that can turn into literally any opponent it's ever seen

 

The :] face is actually a running joke from a first season episode. Duplica's ditto is supposed to be the only one that cant do the face right. He also kept the face when transforming into objects like books(and was a bit of a smartass- he transformed into a book when team rocket was showing him a picture of dratini in a book)

As for why ditto is pink, im personally a big fan of the idea that dittos are failed mew clones. Same base color, same shiny, same weight, and both can transform. Also mew can learn any move, and so can ditto just temporarily via transforming.

Hm, well once they got out and started getting found, im guessing they were largely moved around by trainers for breeding purposes, and im guessing they reproduce by division? But ig only in the wild- maybe daycare conditions arent right for them

But if ditto is such a relatively new Pokemon species, imagine how literally every other Pokemon species in the world reacted to suddenly having these little pink blobs that can transform into anything everywhere.

Ditto is absolutely the pokemon world's main cryptid for awhile. On that note, imagine pokemon trainer memes. Purugly would make up half of all Bode pics

 

This is true about the face except

in Pokemon Snap, the only way to get a pic of Ditto was to throw a smoke ball at a group of bulbasaur and force them to transform back. How could you tell which bulbasaur?



They all had the face. I posit it's young dittos that have the trouble with perfect mimicry. It's the problem of never being able to see your own face without a mirror. Young dittos don't know what their own faces look like and can't tell how/why it's different for the other pokemon's face. Later they either find and practice with a reference (reflections in water, store windows, etc) or else they just make their best approximation of "well those eyes are this shape and color so I will do that."
