I know I tend to default to meme when I'm dealing with grief, which is why I post so rarely in Witness Me and keep it to short stock phrases. Any "I don't know how to handle this" situation/emotion, really. I default to movie quotes, song lyrics, and memes when I don't know what to say.

fair but when i watched danny phantom, i got the impression that danny was stressed by the pressure and time sink of keeping up two identities and wouldn't want a third one

    Oh, he definitely was.
But his antagonist could manage to replicate himself 4 times seemlessly, and by the end of the show Danny was managing at least 1 time pretty well. With another couple years, given his growth rate in powers, he could probably keep up his identities by having ghost power duplicates separately running them.

On Kintsugi? No idea. In general? A need for a sense of group identity and belonging.

Memes can also be a competitive thing for some people i think, trying to be more attention grabbing than others. Its like peacocks, only with grainy jpegs of pepe with pastel text in comic sans plastered over it.

Sometimes the competition and belonging are even part of the same thing. Establishing who gets it the most and therefore belongs the most. Weeding out those who don't get it. Competitive displays of acculturation.

Reminds me of injokes, which is a big thing in a lot of social spaces I've found to instant bring around a sense of inclusion. Tho thinking of it, I guess memes can be the exact same thing as injokes, just on a larger scale? All your base are belong to us is literally the injoke of an entire subculture (and generation, I'd also say)

Eta: aw what why'd I get so serious all of a sudden

Huhhh. I wouldn't have thought of that (making a meme as attention-having) partly because I don't remember who came up with most of ours. I'd have to go digging to see who did the first butterknife joke, who extended "thanks Seebs", and so on... And partly because the person who makes it is making a joke, while the people who echo and mutate it make the meme.

In-joke inclusiveness, I can see that.

Skimming the thread, I see that @furrylatula was the first to duplicate the thanking of Seebs in a deliberately joking manner, and you were the first to formally call for its inclusion as a meme. Trophies for you both!
