I was a big fan of The Last Exorcism, The Taking of Deborah Logan and The Possession of Michael King. I'm always on the look out for a demon possession film that gives me the same heebies as The Exorcist did the first time I watched it...
The Exorcism of Emily Rose was the first-ever horror movie I ever saw, and it still scares the shit out of me. The Last Exorcism gets some really good scares in but has an up-close animal death, if you don't like that. The Rite was fairly terrifying and has the bonus of Anthony Hopkins. The Possession and The Babadook are technically not demon-possession movies but I'm gonna mention them anyway because they're great. Hope you find something you like!
Devil is pretty good for mind altering stuff, its one of my favorite movies. It can be a little cheesy and heavy handed with the metaphors and christian stuff, and its by m night shamalamadingdong but i still like it a lot. Its on american netflix if you're interested, i dont know how much that helps you
If you don't mind your demon posession to come in found footage/mockumentary format with a helping of scientists and governments being awful on the side, I enjoyed the Atticus Institute! YMMV but it gave me teh spooks as well as the satisfying ending for all douchebags in horror film deserve XDD
I've heard of that one! How gruesome is it? I'm all for eldritch horrorterrors from the great beyond, but torture porn bores me to tears ^^;;;
It is super gruesome in parts, although not so much torture porn as brief flashes of gory shit that went down in the haunted ship in the past.
Reporting back - THAT WAS SURPRISINGLY AWESOME :D Nicely tense, with good effects and a very light use of the CGI that was still painfully young and obvious at the time. Kinda reminds me of what I always thought Dead Space should have been. Definitely rose my hackles on a couple of scenes, and Sam Neil, holy shit - I'm just NOT USED to having him in a bad guy role. (Although, one thing - the first line after the credits made me LOL so hard it was a while before I could settle down and take the film any kind of seriously XD "2015 - First Moon Colony Settled." PFFFT AND THIS WAS MADE IN '97. Talk about overly optimistic XDD) I think I'm gonna try Pandorum next - I saw the trailer for that when it first came out, although I've got a vague idea that might be Inbred Cannibals IN SPAACCCCCE which is why I avoided it at first. (TCM stuff bores the heckie heck out of me ^^;;;) EDIT: URGH, so Pandorum is exactly what I didn't want it to be. Gonna try something random on UK Netflix instead XDD
Reporting back on a german found footage film called "The Presence"! It's the story of some douchebag who takes his best mate and his girlfriend to a haunted castle in the middle of nowhere. Very much shades of 'Most Haunted' (UK ghost hunting show) - with a satisfying twist ending and - I'm not sure if I can call it leaning on the fourth wall, it's not quite that meta, but you really get the unsettling feeling that the entity sees you as well as you see it. Still not sure if it was the castle itself or something else - I mean they're out in the Black Forest from the looks of it, and there's an extremely high concetration of Fair Folk and related fairy stories set there - but I really, really enjoyed it. It wasn't the best of it's genre - that still goes to Noroi, imho - but it was a solid effort closely on par with the first Paranormal Activity.
Here's a fan recreation of the hallway from the Silent Hills P.T., done in Unity. I just played it. It's not so much a game as it is... interactive fanart, I guess. Took me less than 10 minutes. You can't really do much of anything except walk back and forth from one end of the hall to the other, but Things happen while you do so. I never got to play the real thing, but this was fairly satisfying.
So I watched Clinical and it sucks and you should skip it, especially if you have any experience with trauma or psychiatry, because the writing plays fast and loose with both. While also suffering from classic Horror Movie Stupid Gas where the heroine does absolutely nothing right while being the most incompetent psychiatrist ever. I give it a D. For Dumb.
Watching trailers for upcoming horror films 'cause I don't got cable and...Split... "An individual with multiple personalities can change their body chemistry with a thought!" me:
@Ruevian someone i know rec'd that film to me recently and i was just like [excaliburface] no thnx it looks shitty bye
