Probably the same way they react to everything else: with screaming and hysterics, plus the word problematic. Don't go in the tag after.
Spoiler: actually using the spoiler tag for spoilers Is it the thing about Garnet and Pearl having issues with each other? Because I personally am super excited about that if true, but...yeah, the Tumblr fandom is going to be fucking AWFUL about it, especially given Pearl's already-divisive status and Garnet's near-universal adoration. (honestly i think garnet is the least interesting crystal gem but god fucking forbid i say that out loud >_>)
Yeah the actual plot doesn't worry nearly as much as the fandom. I can trust the SU writers to handle this well us like they have everything else. (I would go so far as to say that the people working on this show are a real..... gem. maybe even a.... diamond in the rough) but I am probably going to have to avoid the fandom like the plague. Spoiler: not really spoilers I feel you. I am not a fan of Amethyst. Since her character development I don't think she's as annoying as she used to be but I don't find her really appealing at all. I also like Lapis but I hate the way the tumblr fandom treats her as a precious cinnamon roll/perpetual victim when she chose to fuse with Jasper and is powerful enough to control the entire fucking ocean. She is probably the most powerful gem we've seen so far and for everything she's been through she is strong and a survivor.
Wait, does this person have an in with the crewniverse, or are they just super good at predicting plotlines? and can I have links, pls? And yeah, I definitely feel you on the vitriol. I don't usually take part in fandoms, but for the ones I have interacted with, this one definitely takes the cake for most overtly hostile. It's such a shock to the system too, given how the show is so devoted to showing balanced and nuanced situations and characters. And just the overall optimism, yeh? i wonder why so many angry, cynical peeps are so attracted to this show. Spoiler: Lapis ranting And Lapis woobiefication too, holy shit. It's so fucking weird the way people just look right past her and see whatever pretty blue damsel in distress they want to, especially given the episodes preceding Chille Tid spelled out plainly just how unhealthy her actions are. I mean, the very first episode talked about how fucked up it is to sacrafice yourself for someone who neither wants or needs it, and I'm still seeing posts and fics romanticizing the whole situation. And, maybe this is just me, but it's weird how people take Lapis's "Let me do this for you" as confirmation that she's acting completely and utterly selflessly. Steven doesn't want her to do this. Steven said so right to her face, and she ignored it, because she's doing it for herself, because she's traumatized and angry and she feels like she needs it. I hate the idea that she's fucking herself over for the sake of a boy she only just met. That can't be her entire motivation, I refuse to believe that.
Spoiler: Lapis Stuff I see the 'Just let me do this for you' as - well, one, in my personal headcanon, most Gems are raised to want orders and commanders to sacrifice for. The Crystal Gems have gotten away from this in time but most of the other Gems, including Lapis, haven't. And also, I kind of get the idea that - there's this sort of idea that you need to repay debts? Steven saved her, he was the first person in god knows how long to treat her like a person, and so she might be trying to pay that back because otherwise it'll utterly eat at her. I admit this is partially inspired by Gems-as-fae thoughts and there's not a whole lot of basis for it though. Or at least, that's how I'm thinking of it? Bluh words.
Spoiler: spoilers spoilers See, I am a big fan of Pearl but assuming all this is 100% true and factual I can admit this is legitimately fucked up and a danger to everything she wants to protect. It sounds like the fall out from this is going to last awhile and that's good! It should last awhile. But I also have faith that everything is gonna be okay in the end because that's just how this show rolls. Everyone is flawed, but redeemable. I'm worried about the fan backlash though because people where already calling Pearl "an abusive piece of shit who shouldn't be around children" after Rose's Scabbard, and it only intensified after Sword to the Sword.
Someone please tattoo this across my chest. (Honestly, the more we learn about Pearl’s flaws and issues, the more I relate to her...)
Naw, the reddit thing regards upcoming episodes as well. But oh man this episode. Spoiler: spoilers! sardonyx is so hot and awesome and hotsome and I want her to squish me oh my gosh but also I am heartbroken. AND SAD. Very sad and heartbroken.
Spoiler: way off topic sardonyx musings I wonder why Sardonyx isn't stripy when sardonyx(the mineral) is a specifically banded form of chalcedony. It makes the Malachite/Jasper stripes and swirls seem even more unusual than it already did. Spoiler: Also off topic, but this time also selfish and whiney I keep thinking I'm acting like a jackass, but I can't tell if that's just me being dumb or if I'm legitimately behaving badly, specifically on this thread. I think I might be acting kind of weird and aggressive about things, and maybe I just need to shut up, sorry.
if you have been behaving badly, I haven't seen it? but I consider "griping together about bad fandom behavior" to be a bonding activity so
Yeah, you haven't been acting awfully or anything. Spoiler: Also I'm kind of wondering where the stage magician getup came from - it doesn't seem to draw specifically from Garnet or Pearl, if that makes sense. Also I really loved the dragonflies, those were great and I'm wondering if either Pearl or Garnet could do something like that.
HELLO THREAD, I am excited about this episode and let me tell you why: Spoiler This really just jives with my theory that Pearl could go "dark" and briefly betray the gems by siding with Yellow Diamond. So far we've seen Pearl is more than capable of sacrificing the team to get what she wants, she goes near yandere for Rose, and how many times has she put Steven in danger when emotion gets the best of her? She's SO lonely, and of all the gems she seems to like humans the least/understands them the least. Everything she's done was for Rose, and Rose isn't here anymore. She loves Steven, but if given the chance to go back to homeworld... IDK. I think there's a very good chance that this is laying foundation for a brief foray into betrayal. Which would be most excellent from a storytelling viewpoint. I'd love Steven, who is compassion and faith in friends personified, to bring her back from the brink.
@Ruevian yes please. Spoiler: spoilers What he did with Lapis, showing compassion even when he didn't really know what was going on gives me major hope for that. Pearl loves Steven so much, it's just tangled up in this mess of sadness and homesickness and jealousy that she's not very well-equipped to process.
Spoiler: Pearl Stuff Wait, where did it show that Pearl was willing to sacrifice for the team? In this episode it kind of seemed like she didn't think there was a real threat to the Gems to repair the tower, so there's that. Also I just feel like - going back to Homeworld would be the ultimate betrayal of Rose Quartz and her ideals. Plus going by the theories that she's defective, she couldn't really expect anything good from Homeworld. I could see her going rogue and breaking with the Gems without going over to Homeworld, though, or nearly becoming a monster Gem because of all her PTSD stuff.
