"I am. I am Valiska." The first consonant sounds almost more like a "fh" than a "v" but it's voiced like a "v", and there's almost a stop between the 's' and the 'k'. "At least I'm the only one I know. There's a song about a girl named Valiska that's popular right now. Some people think it might be about me, but...I'm not sure why. Ford likes it a lot."

You're doing the over-explainy thing that usually means people are trying to distract from shit like, I dunno, a small police team breaking in from the backdoor.

 

"Interesting name! Mine is common. When I want to be nobody, it is good. Not much time for that anymore, what with war and all the publicity stuff the Army has me do." She shrugs, a what-can-you-do kind of expression. "And working on my music career and starring in a movie or two. Can't be a gamer girl forever!"

 

"I'm a university professor. Sorry." Valiska smiles.

"Oh, my goodness, you sound like Mara Bai!" After a moment, Valiska thinks perhaps the comparison is a little unfair, given how Mara has been acting of late. "...when she was younger, of course, and we were better friends."

 

Lame. Where's the fun in that?

"My idea of fun is probably not quite the same as yours." Valiska grins at him.

"Well, no, you wouldn't have, you're not from my dimension. She used to be a friend of mine. I've got her daughter in my household, now. Not that I think you're going to turn out the same, but you remind me of how she used to be."

 

I'm a hollering hooligan on a pleasure cruise lifetime prison sentence. You can't let your job dictate your life like that.

 

"I used to be a revolutionary...?" Valiska shrugs. "But then we won, and somehow we all ended up respectable."

 

"She turned out badly?" Hana says, knowing how that kind of tale tends to go. In a quieter voice she adds, "She must have forgotten. There's your image and everything they believe in of you. It's not you. It's a character you play. People go wrong who forget that."

 

I poisoned an entire government office.

Valiska nods. "She's not a very good mother, and...I know very well she's been trying to steal my friends' work!" she blurts out, frowning. "Her two daughters were singles, which I think she thought would save her work, but they are very poorly socialised, and the younger one would rather live with me, which I am fine with her doing, but it's still such a shame."
