Eheheheh! Well, yes and no! They're called Classes! The world I grew up on didn't have them, same with the Aspects, but the place where I was born and where I recently returned to, they're a pretty big deal there! I know of fourteen, and they work in conjunction with your Aspect! There's Knight and Seer and Witch and Page and Rogue and Mage, we have those in our part of the Incipisphere, and outside there's also Maid and Sylph and Thief and Heir and Bard and Prince and Muse and Lord! The Aspect describes what you and your powers are, and the Class describes how you use them and what your path is going to be like! But there's a lot of variety between people still! The format is Class of Aspect, so I'm a Mage of Breath!
    Does that make sense?

    That's the rub, isn't it?

You are saying this to a nomad. However, even that aside the possibility of a third option seems worth attempting. Granted, I've been told I'm stupidly willful on more than one occasion.

-looks valiska and sighs. mostly out of exasperation with the being unable to FIX THE THING BY BREAKING IT OVER THE TROLL'S HEAD-

    No. I suppose we can't.

-gives one last glance at venus. HATEFUL. AND INTENSE. your skull would be crushed under our shuk'orok and a grand cry would be given. but not now. that is stupid. back to looking at the catte though-

Valiska sighs. "I know," she says quietly. "I'm a mother. But that society..."

She shrugs. "From all that I have heard, there are simply no bonds between individuals. They have quadrants, but they all seem to have very short-lived or unfulfilling relationships, unlike Alternians or Beforans. I don't understand it at all."

Quadrants? That's not a term I'm familiar with. Not that I'm familiar with the idea of no bonds, either. I might be a loner but family is paramount in Mandalorian culture. The idea of no bonds is about as alien as the idea that blood bonds are the only that matter.

<Yes!! Thank you! How do you find your class, then, if Aspects just start... expressing?>

<I wouldn't call it 'stupidly'!!! Finding another way around a difficult problem is a good thing!!! But... killing doesn't always need to be that third way :c>

<They can still try. And that's nearly as bad.>

That'd be appreciated. So you're an Alternian then?

It doesn't. As I said before I'm aware it's not the solution here. I won't act, though I'd prefer to do so.

A flicker of relief makes its way onto his expression this time, and he took the teacup and saucer, smiling. "Thanks!" And then he took a sip, sighing contentedly after he did so. He very much enjoyed tea.

In how your Aspect expresses itself, duh!
    (Ilma giggles)
Usually you get told on your landquest first, though. So you might be in for the tricky way of finding it out, if you don't come across the gateway.

Aye. Greenblood, born under Canes Venatici, the Hunting Barkbeasts.
The quadrants are our main way of forming close interpersonal bonds. Due to the way Alternia is set up, only children and those of the Jade caste live there, and the Jades are confined to the Brooding Caverns, and we are raised by beasts called Lusus Naturae in singular, Lusii in short plural.
(Oneira whistles, and Huskiemom pokes her head out from... somewhere. She trots over to Oneira to get some headscritches and a treat.) This here's mine, Huskiemom.
Our quadrants are the only people we trust, everyone else is potentially dangerous and will be kept at arm's length. The people quadranted to you and people quadranted to those people are called clade, and it depends on the clade or individual trolls how many corners removed still counts as inclade.
Now as you might discern from the term, there's four quadrants, and they all have different societal roles. They run along two axis, love and rivalry -- although the Alternian term translates closer to "hate" for the last one, "rivalry" is a closer cultural translation. The second axis is concupiscent and conciliatory.
Concupiscent-Love is called red, or flushed, or matespritship, and is symbolised by a heart. It is usually between two matesprits, although some have larger arrangements. From what I've seen of nonalternian media, it's sort of the classic thing interpreted as romantic love in a lot of other cultures, although that's kind of silly -- all quadrants are romantic. And I don't know enough about your culture, so... Your matesprit is the person you share your bed with, and who makes the sun set and the moons rise. They may be flawed, but you love them for their flaws.
Conciliatory-Love is called pale, or moirallegiance, and is symbolised by a diamond. It is usually between two moirails, although some have larger arrangements. Your moirail is the person who knows you best, and protects you from the world and the world from you. Moirallegiance is absolute trust and honesty. They're the person you bitch to, and also the person who calls you out on your shit.
Concupiscent-Rivalry is called black, or pitch, or caliginous, or kismesistude, and is symbolised by a spade. It's that person you can't do with, but also not without. They're who makes you strive to be better, because losing to them is unacceptable, and they're infuriating. They attack every weakness of yours because a troll who shows weakness gets done in. Your kismesis is someone you fuck, but falling asleep next to them is a recipe for getting pranked. Hard. Kismesistudes are volatile enough as is, so more than two participants tends to lead to disaster.
Conciliatory-Rivalry is called ashen, or auspisticism, and is symbolised by a club. This is what happens when a quadrant becomes unbalanced, and a third party, the so-called middle leaf, joins in to rebalance it. It usually happens with kismesistudes, but there's other cases. They also happen when a specific relationship would be a really, really bad idea for the clade.

Thaat's the basic rundown, but I promise you, it goes deeper.

    You're welcome!
(You like being assessed as "not a threat".)

Gateway to the Incipisphere! Takes the form of a game, sometimes.
Everyone who returns has a Land in peril they have to save! Mine is the Land of Steps and Storms!
(A vision of a bismuth planet unfurls around Ilma, oilslick coloured ground steps and angles around each other, rises high up and dips beneath a sea of clouds which occasionally spew lightning, ash, and rainstorms)
    And that is the Landquest.
