"That makes no fucking sense whatsoever," says Valiska. "Ford is a man. We've been married for twenty-five years. I'm not sure how many sweeps that is, but I know it's more than ten. Gender is not a barrier to maintaining a long-term, fulfilling relationship. You just have to want other people in your life and care about their needs and feelings, and put some work into keeping in touch with each other's hearts and minds. And understand that survival is easier when you can rely on a network of social support."

[He stumbles upright, then pats out the couple of still burning spots on his hoodie.]

Valiska shrugs. "I am not really sure what that has to do with it, though. There are only two people I've met so far in the entirety of the multiverse that I've wanted to have sex with, but I have relationships of various kinds with lots of people."

Four romances? That's certainly an interesting system. My culture, the Mando'ade, only have a single romance. Based off this description the "flushed" quadrant perhaps fits it best, though your "pitch" and "pale" ones have aspects common to it as well. These sorts of relationships may be solidified in marriages, and the expectation is for children to result from those.

Which leads neatly into what the strongest unit is to a Mando: family. Our family groups may or may not be by blood, and little distinction is made between the two. This aspect leads to a deal of confusion with Aruetiise, foreign cultures. Especially given that parental relationships are within the child's legal right to sever. The idea of Dar'buir, divorce of a parent, has horrified some I've explained it to. That aside, families typically consist of one or more parents, buir, who then care for a series of children, ade. Children with the same parents being siblings, or vode. It's worth noting that just as one can pick their parents one can pick their siblings. I have a brother by birth, but the others are ones of my choosing. The relationships were solidified via word, making them legally binding. However before that they were formed simply by interaction. They were my siblings before legally being deemed as such. Back to family, however. The individual family is then linked to other families that share relatives, forming a larger clan. The clan then seeks the protection of a larger house. Houses are full of unrelated or only distantly related clans, and at times the head clan of a house may change. Lineage is thus very important to us, a fact which surprises many. Just the matter of inheritance is murkier than it is for some Aruetiise. The houses then answer to the Mand'alor, our overall leader. While we may argue and war with one another, this connected Mandalorian heritage is supposed to link us together. In a sort of spiritual sense of brotherhood. The key word being "supposed to". The tightest and most vital of these three relationships family, clan-and-house, and culture is, for most, family. Practically speaking. They're all supposed to be held as equal given our codes of honor. The reality is far messier, though. Codes tend to be.

Outside of that are the Aruetiise. While friendships with non-Mandalorians aren't frowned upon necessarily they are viewed as different. Often times lesser. The idea of any form of romantic or familial ties to an aruetii is anathema to a deal of Mandalorians. Instead, the foreigner in question is to be adopted into a clan and culture. There's certainly a worth to that concept, but I question the necessity of it. I'm somewhat atypical on that front. Then again given that one of my close friends is a Hutt, that goes without saying perhaps.

The Mand'alor for clarification is voted in. He is, in theory, supposed to represent us all. A sort of nigh godlike figure of renown and respect. Often times he's simply in the most powerful house at the time. Or he happened to pull off a successful coup and no one is willing to challenge him.
