That's the joke, yes :P 人間 is a bit too... scientific? for this purpose, I think? The nuance on that one is specifically "human being" as opposed to "person". The generic term for "person" is generally just 人 hito. I've seen 腐人 fujin used before, but not that often, and also it's a pun on 夫人 which means "wife" so I don't think it would work very well as a gender-neutral term. The usual joke is that you start as a 腐女子 (pun on 婦女子 "mature woman"), then become a 貴腐人 kifujin (pun on 貴婦人 "noble lady") when you get married, then a 汚超腐人 ochoufujin (pun on an old anime character named お蝶夫人 "Butterfly Wife") when you get old.
Lmao my fujoshi knowledge is terribly weak! I thought about "ko," but thought it might not be entirely neuter because it shows up so often in girls' names. but again I literally do not know Japanese, so I defer to the knowledge of the the more learned fujoshi scholars
this has turned into an entirely different conversation and tbh i am fascinated and not at all regretting it lmfao
I am mostly-fluent in Japanese but not a native speaker, and I only started reading more stuff with actual fandom terms in it recently, so please take this as "I sort of know what I'm talking about, I think!" rather than me actually being an expert on the topic, lol. 子 is generally "child", but when it appears at the end of some words, like 男子/女子/etc, it just means "person". And @Birdy is correct that it's a suffix on female names a lot, but by itself it doesn't really suggest a particular gender. I am sad I'm not more up on my LGBT discourse vocab in Japanese, because I don't really know the right terms to refer to NB genders, which makes it hard to Google this sort of thing ):
*mostly-fluent Japanese speaker party* I really wanna know where to learn more fandom/casual/internet speak! Mostly so I can fucking understand Japanese twitter. Because oh my god what is Japanese twitter. Where do you pick that stuff up from?
What about 腐男女? I mean that's still gendered kinda, but =| It's also not a pun, unless I made one accidentally
a'ight, while i'm in here: cough up all ya'lls favorite wholesome stuff. give me the fluff and relationships and happy endings that don't have that funky lens put on'em. (fujoshi as a term is a mixed bag for me. half of it leads me to actually really nice stuff, half of it leads me to. ... well. 8/ y'know.) SO give me the Good Good that'll make me !!! and happy and warm and fuzzy feels. i've seen -a lot- of really awesome oneshots or smaller-press series that were super goddamn good but i was an idiot and never saved the stuff i used to find in any functional way, so it's been lost to the ages. 8I (also bless fan content for feeding my fucking soul over the years when larger press continued to fail me. viva la sandbox.)
@TheMockingCrows Sex Therapist by Kodaka Kazuma is very good. Actually just about everything by her is good. I think Kizuna starts with some dubcon (I'll admit I skipped the first few volumes) but it blossoms into a really sweet long-term and healthy relationship. I rec this author's work more than anyone else. Elektel Delusion is extremely good. I think it has a gross spinoff series with side characters though so be careful with other stuff by this author. There's a sequel to Fake, Fake II, although there wasn't much of it last I checked, which was, admittedly, a few years ago. I've only gotten a few chapters in but Blood Bank is pretty promising for consensual BDSM vampire/human relationship with interesting lore, and full color art. suggestion rescinded. there is nothing wholesome about this story.
hhhhh ok im reading over elektel delusion again and its still good but there is some questionable stuff. not a ton and better than most yaoi but it's not perfect
The first thing that came to mind was this Haikyuu doujinshi. Afaik you don't really have to have seen the show to appreciate it. ETA: Except for knowing who the characters are, of course. Ukai and Takeda-sensei, respectively the (volunteer) coach and faculty adviser of a high school volleyball team.
I'll give it a peek later. :o tyvm I think I'll also add on to my earlier SHOW ME STUFF request: I'd also super duper dig sfw stuff as well! :D i love me some porn but dang the sweet stuff's good too.
I definitely didn't just order all the volumes of Loveless that got released after 2008. Definitely, not me,,,,,,,,,,,,,
@TheMockingCrows I can probably recommend some oneshots and whatnot (porn and non-porn) if you don't mind shorter works?
Spoiler: Discourse on the other hand, though, it really bugs me when straight girls call their gay ships sin and objectify gay men. I have read (and written) so many fics that didn't involve safe mlm sex, and it really gave me a warped view of things. not to say that anyone, even straight girls, can't enjoy works with mlm in them, i just feel that the genre could be so much better (healthier) than it has been.
it really could. like. straight up point blank. the well has been really thoroughly poisoned in a lot of ways and it really, -really- sucks to see the worst parts spread as the main vein. like. i love problematic porn as much as anyone else, but holy mother of god there is a -lot- of problematic porn being held up as Good Healthy Examples and it's upsetting.
Oh! I have to recommend everything Yoshinaga Fumi has ever done! As far as I know, Antique Bakery is the only one of her works to get animated, but I think she has a real skill for writing interactions that feel real. There's a very distinct awkward you-had-to-be-there sense of humor in her stuff, especially (non-mlm) Flower of Life. I think I enjoyed Solfege, too. I don't think I've read anything of hers more recent than Ooku, but I trust it's all great. Antique Bakery and Flower of Life have both a sweetness and a maturity to them where things aren't always simple, and people are flawed, but they're good at heart and things work out in the end.
I've seen antique bakery on lists but never went for it :oc never heard of Flower of Life or Solfege before tho. dang. I'll have to check this stuff out!
I mostly just try to read things and then aggressively google any words I don't know. A lot of times with slang words you can find a Yahoo Answers post or something where a Japanese person didn't know what it meant either, and other people explain it to them. For fandom-specific words, Pixiv and Nico Nico both have their own wikis with tons of fandom terms, so if you're trying to figure out the words for "pairing" or "genderswap" or similar they are super useful. A lot of it's really just practice, though, unfortunately. I can't read Japanese Twitter as well as I'd like yet either ):
