okay so I was yammering about the word fujoshi like just a couple posts ago so I feel like a hypocrite

but like. a term that literally means "rotten girl" is kind of...not great. same kind of unfortunate as people who refer to their favorite gay ships as "sin" and stuff

like I wrote a fic where naruto and sasuke had anal without lube or a condom and just. NO. I was really misinformed and thought that was okay. Ive also seen fic where all sorts of things are used in place of lube, which would definitely lead to infection.

slightly unrelated but I'd also like to see less fetishized trans men in mlm fic. it's usually the same story but I can't get enough of trans!dave in davekat fic...although it's so often written poorly and very stereotypically. babies pls do not the ace bandage for binding.

Excellent! I love everything by Mishima Kazuhiko (some of her stuff has teacher/student or some-degree-of-incest relationships, which doesn't bother me but I know some people aren't into that; there's very little dubcon/noncon or other dark stuff though). All the stories in Love-Letter of Flowers are sfw and fluffy (the first one is teacher/student, but iirc all the rest are same-age). Sekai wa Temee de Mawatterui is an adorable story about dumb teenagers (ch.5 is an unrelated oneshot that's teacher/student). Mamiya Seitai Ningyouten is about androids (kind of; the main couple are a human guy and the guy who makes the androids). (Actually there's a lot of androids in her work.) Radical Blood Monster is a cute sfw story about a guy stuck with a live-in vampire. Love Neko is about catboy androids. The first two chapters of Isso Mou, Kudokitai! are teacher/student but chapters 3-5 are more dumb teenagers.

…I seriously love her stuff. Uh. I will have more recs shortly!

there's also the problem of soon as you say 'yaoi' the bad shit begins in a lot of places because there's a high chance of everyone assuming the absolute worst of you as a person (ala That Kind Of Fan), and that got tiring so fucking fast in the places i used to hang around. mlm ships is a lot easier to go by for searches now, but it's also not as international unless there's a much better term i could be using to find the content i want. if there is one that's as wide spread or spreading that i can use to find the things i'd like internationally, i am all ears bc wow that's a lot less sifting for me.

(admittedly i refer to All of my shipping as garbage but that's not out of OH I'M SINNING HEE HEE it's more of.. idek. a lot of my shipping preferences are #problematic just based on who they are in their canon and nothing beyond that and it's become my habit to refer to all of my own activities as such. i can't explain this phenomena that well. its 1am and i had a pretty bad brain episode earlier. :grasps at straws of wordsing)

eta: i mean, i run the unhealthy ships thread. trash rave and raccoon bouncers in tuxedos.

I was under the impression that fujoshi named themselves that. But then I guess both that and the "sin" meme come from a place of internalized shame.

Yeah when I call my ships trash it's not because it is SIN because gay. But because what the fuck else do you call like Ganth/Greshan. That thrives off the abuse of Ganth by his brother Greshan. The trash part is that someone is abusing their younger brother because they think it's fun. In a way I find it comforting too because well I'm gonna be called gross trash anyway so fuck it. May as well wear that shit with pride. Yes, it's trash. Now get the fuck out of my garbage bin and go elsewhere.

Never used the word fujoshi in relation to myself though because it just doesn't fit. For a variety of reasons.

they did name themselves, but yeah you're right, and I think the shame comes from homophobia, at least in part.

honestly, I think some of the reason young teenagers get into mlm stuff is the sense of strangeness and transgression, especially if you never knew any gay men growing up. it makes for a safe little rebellion, but the reason that can exist is because same sex relationships are still seen as being kind of outside the norm and unusual.

    idk if I'm making sense

NAONO BOHRA IS ALSO FANTASTIC. Her stuff can get pretty dark, but there's lots of happy endings and guys living happily ever after with demons. Oh, and most of her characters are not high schoolers, which is something of a departure for the genre!

eta: Oh, and sometimes her characters are disabled! Jouzetsuna Yubi has a deaf main character, and I know a couple other stories have blind characters.

@Aondeug @TheMockingCrows i don't see anything wrong with calling those ships trash as long as you call all of your ships trash. the problems start when it's only the gay ships that you call garbage.

I write super kinky stuff so I will say "I'm sinning" as a sort of self-depreciative defence against people who might try to yell at me for being gross

Oh no I have plenty of trash ships of all orientations. Though not as many het ones largely because I find het impossibly fucking boring most of the time. You have to be a fucked het ship to get my undying love now it seems.

Very fond of Killing Stalking now. I am happy. I can add Yoonbum/Sangwoo to my glorious locker of horrible trash ships that I love.

i'm aware of that, yeah. mostly i have no idea what to do with the SINNING~ crowd, it's baffling and too loud and not really something i go near since i can Nope out in most circumstances and the vast majority of it came after i got older. i wish i knew how to even approach that problem.

See, I have absolutely no sense of shame and no religious concept of "sin" (that is, something that is wrong Just Because, rather than wrong because it actually harms someone), so I'm just like HEY HERE'S MY SHIPS AND MY SMUT, WORLD! But I totally understand why other people might not feel that way.

eta: Oh, and my first-ever m/m ship was Bankotsu/Jakotsu from Inuyasha. They're zombie mercenary antagonists. I was thirteen. Obviously my tastes have never been vanilla.

again I think it has a lot to do with being young and sexuality seeming like a transgression. mushroom talked about the "sinning" thing being a sort of defense against people who hate on kink.

for yaoi fans it's like the same thing, instead of except for weird kink it's for like...really entirely normal stuff, and I think it's also partially a defense against the internal fear and shame you get from exploring your sexuality, a way of making light of it so it doesn't freak you out

I always suspected there were complex psychosexual forces at work leading to the "yaoi fan" phenomenon....

    *coughs* anyway

unknownanonymous i am inimitable, i am an original|18+

there's pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, sloth...

but when tumblr talks about sin, it's usually just lust they're talking about.

so, alas, if a sfw gen fic was to be described as "sin" 'cause of one of the other six happening within it, people would be very misled.

For the record, I would really prefer people not make sweeping assumptions about the reasons fujoshi picked that name for themselves and continue to use it, considering it's a Japanese term coined by Japanese women in response to Japanese fandom culture, and vast majority of the people in this thread don't seem to be Japanese or fluent in the language.

It's one thing to discuss unpleasant trends in English-speaking fandom, where most people are presumably working off a similar Western cultural background, but once we get into uncharitable assumptions about another culture that none of the people participating actually know much about, it feels pretty inappropriate.

I would go read Japanese fandom wikis and see what they say about the history of the word and reasons it was chosen, because I know there is discussion of that in there, but I'm a bit too braindead for extensive Japanese reading atm.

The culture differences also affect things like "whether it's important to depict safe sex in porn", btw. I am told by people who know more than me on this subject that it's not at all a major topic in Japanese fandom discourse. You get a lot of BL manga that doesn't show that sort of thing, and not all of it is written by women.

"BL" is generally preferred over "yaoi" these days, so you'd probably have better luck searching under that, if you want Japanese media at least.

this thread is moving waaaaay too fast for me to keep up with now and still type decent responses, sob
