Hope it's okay to take this part out of its spoiler, since it's not spoily?

    My response is, though.
So initially I thought this didn't make sense because Yellow instructs the Pearls to sing as if this is a normal thing to do, but then I realised it fits in with another headcanon of mine: the reason Pearls are subservient is because they are actually based on organic life. When YD spoke to Peridot, we heard the disdain dripping from her voice as she said "organic life", so we know what she thinks of it generally. I think maybe Pearls were inspired by less-evolved organic life from another planet, so they're basically considered objects, not real living gems. (Considering that IRL pearls come from oysters and aren't actually gems, I mean.)

If this is accurate, then I hope there are Ambers too. :)

That reminds me: does anyone else wonder why Garnet shows so much more of Ruby in her form than she does of Sapphire? It seems weirdly out of balance for her.

I've thought that maybe she shows more of Ruby's appearance externally because she shows more of Sapphire's personality externally, but that doesn't feel quite right. Has anyone else had ideas about this?

Maybe the real metaphor was the pizza we made along the way.

i haven't been keeping up with SU, but when i found out it was another mommy issues episode i had to see it.

as someone who has a lot of mommy issues this episode made me feel really weird feelings. it was good and i know it'll do a lot for the kids dealing w/ those kind of issues. but still.

rose felt very fake to me in this episode. like, except for the bit at the end there, where she got angry, she pretty much fit the idealized image the crystal gems have of her perfectly. and what she said about sports sounded too rose to be real, if that makes sense. too flanderized, i guess...

I got a very similar feeling, and I'm thinking that in the beginning the room was taking Steven's feelings into account, and only had Rose react more realistically when he finally exploded. I could be wrong, but that's the vibe I got.

Rose is off model to start with, and gets more on model throughout the episode until shes completely on model after the storm

We noticed it too when we were watching. her hair was different and she was completely white. Not like racially white but her skin had no color. it was back to its normal human-ish tone during and after the storm.

That was what I thought, too. Her speech was kind of stilted, based on the idealised version of Rose that Steven has grown up hearing about, and her face reminded me of Greg at times. It made me think of how Greg was the most convincing fake-person the first time Steven got stuck in the room; because they know each other so much better than Steven knows Lars or Sadie, Room-Greg had enough stock-phrases typical of Greg himself that he was able to initially fool Steven into thinking that it was the real Greg. Rose, on the other hand, didn't have stock-phrases the way Greg did, because... well, Steven had never spent time with her the way he did with his dad? So she did have these semi-convincing replies that sounded like things that Steven's subconscious would expect from her, and they were able to get relatively elaborate, but only while sounding like an amalgamation of all the things he's been told that she's said. (Plus the tapes.)

So, at first, the room can't make the real Rose because Steven didn't know the real Rose face-to-face. (Seems odd to say that, since he kind of is the real Rose, but her doesn't have any memories of her, or of being her.) She's pieced together from the quotes he knows and his real-life experience of a loving parent - I assume that's why she reminded me of Greg. Towards the end, she stops responding, because he's asking her all these questions and he knows that he's not going to get an answer, because the room's version of her is only based on what he knows of her and while he knows what she really looked like (hence why she's increasingly on-model), he doesn't have any idea what the answers actually are. He doesn't even know how she would respond if he had the chance to ask her in person - he knows now how Garnet and Pearl act when confronted by difficult questions about the past, but when he asks his dad if he ever talked to Rose about it, the answer is pretty much "not really". Greg diverts back to the softer, fluffy side of human-enamoured enigmatic beautiful Rose that Steven gets from the Gems as well, although Greg's perspective is different and much more human. The Gems don't talk about confronting Rose; they talk about her confronting their mutual enemies, but even when Steven asks them directly, they don't tell him stories about truly arguing with her. (Pearl saying she wants to stay on Earth with her doesn't count as a real argument, IMO.) That could be why she gets closer and closer, visually, to the real Rose, while she becomes less and less responsive verbally.

Yeah, I think that was kind of the point, since she was room!Rose.
    Even though it's Rose's room--it's still a creation.

It was this that made me question: what exactly is the room? Does it just project things into the mind of the person? Because the phone can't see it, so it can't be real...

I get the feeling that what we've seen of the room isn't anywhere near it's full potential. Steven doesn't know how to use the room, so we don't see it doing whatever it was originally designed for. Rose could have used it to simulate possible battles or other scenarios. Or it could have been a kind of counseling room, to help her figure out what she really wanted or hoped for.

Well, she liked keeping secrets, and had a lot of regrets. I wonder if she ever used it to go over "what ifs" about the war. "What if I'd been able to convince Bismuth?" or "what if Pink Diamond hadn't been shattered?" or "what if all those friends of mine were still uncorrupted and able to enjoy this world with me?"

    Nice existent room, Rose.

That almost certainly because she Lives On In Steven, but still. Unsettling.
