So I'm watching the pilot episode of Darkwing Duck prepping for a podcast later. I am having SO MANY FEELS about... just.... everything. The animation is pure joy to watch -- the expressiveness of every gesture and facial expression. The BACKROUNDS are rich in a way I feel is rare to see -- the scenery has as much personality as the characters. Oh but... I just got to this part and my heart just about exploded. We have just met Gosalyn. She is in the process of being ducknapped for... reasons, idk, I missed that part of the plan. She's walking along the street babbling to this henchgoat about everything under the sun and she says this: "You know, I'm not a problem child. Grampa said I just have a lot of spirit. He said when you're full of spirit, everyone else looks empty." This is just woven seamlessly into her chatter, no pause, no tonal shift, just... BANG. Right in the soul. I was SO obsessed with DW when I was a kid, I remember very, very well how the show was capable of getting amazingly poignant and heartfelt. Those were my favourite moments. I love that they start laying the groundwork for that right from the start. I think most modern day kids' programming has lost the spirit that made cartoons like DW really great.
