This is, alas, a major weakness of the series. And one I think Brandon is aware of, considering his Smurfette Principle speech during his lecture series and the increasingly lady-heavy lineup of most of his work after Mistborn. (Shallan's parts of Stormlight in particular have many, many options for terrible f/f ships. :::PPP)

Raybot, the Elantris names generally all have an Aon in them.

Sometimes I seriously wonder what the hell Brandon was thinking when he decided to name a character "Kiin," pronounced "Kai-ai-n."

    Oh.

Yeah just nevermind. Might be a dialect difference in how letters are read or something.

Either beautiful ones or ones that will force me to challenge to a duel to maintain his honor in the face of terrible fantasy names. And we must ask again why is there an h at the end of Zerinah?

it's a language aspect in his book Elantris! i dont really understand it yet At All but i think "aon" describes a pattern of pronunciation of vowels

Nah, it's a worldbuilding thing in Elantris. There's runes called Aons that all have special names and meanings and could be used to cast spells. (I've got a necklace with Aon Ehe on it.)

    If I remember right, vowels in Aon names are always long, so e.g. [Rao]den = ray-o-den, Sar[ene] = sar-ee-nee, [Kii]n = that monstrosity above.

.... this is why he mentioned in the mistborn annotations that the reasons he went for names like "vin" "dockson" "clubs" etc was because people had so much trouble with the elantris names lmao

eta: it might have actually been in the warbreaker annotations when he was describing the naming pattern in there? what matters is: He Learned

    YEP.

Luckily he picked less pain-in-the-ass Weird Naming Rules for Warbreaker (names with repeated consonant sounds) and Stormlight (names that are almost symmetrical).

Is it just me or does he really like names that end in -in.

Oh my fucking god this system sounds like a pain in the ass. So long as the rules are consistent though I'd probably be enamored with it. I don't mind "stupid" pronunciations so long as you have a consistent fucking reason for it. People may bitch all day long about Irish spelling, but in the end the spelling makes perfect sense with Irish's spelling rules. If anyone is wrong it's not the Irish, but the people who refuse to learn how their orthography works. For clarification, I don't mind learners having difficulty with rules. Far from it. I do however take great issue with the people who just won't put in the effort so they can go lol why's it spelled ceilghdhghthuagh but said bob.

Because you piece of shit there are rules.

Slightly off-topic but I love the name Aoife and how it's pronounced. So pretty to look at and to say.
