In the spirit of benefit of the doubt, they could have meant something more like "I'm not sure of this person's gender and don't want to risk offending them by saying so, so I'll wait until I hear them or someone who knows them gender them so I don't have to make it awkward", which I don't think is unreasonable. (Speaking here as a socially anxious trans person who is all in favor of not assuming, but would rather not deal with hurting random cis people's feelings because I'm bad at reading gender.) ... Of course, considering the rest of what you shared, they probably meant it more like that one girl who tried to be ~clever~ by randomly asking to know my shoe size. So your assessment is probably fair. :P
Fanfic comment gripe: when someone is obviously angling at wanting you to write something, but their comment dances around the issue so hard that even after trying to break it down, you have no clue what they're even talking about. You obviously want something, so just! ask!!! I won't necessarily say yes, but I DEFINITELY won't say yes if I can't even parse what you're asking for.
Well its reader insert fic and the reader is actually the author as it is in most cases. A lot of the drama is based around reader having a stalker ex boyfriend whos been after them for 7 years. The author said in an authors note that its based around a thing that actually happened to them, so it explains being shit at boundaries/not knowing what a healthy relationship should look like/making love interest a bit stalkerey (id give more examples of that in particular but i couldnt read anymore and clicked out after a while. It was stuff like "deleting things from your phone to protect you" and "finding out your work schedule so i can show up when youre there even though weve just met each other") Edited: Thats fair, just the character in question was tagged as "not preferring male or female pronouns" and reader character never brought it up again, so im assuming it was just put there because author assumed trying to label them is the appropriate course of action??? Shrug
Oh, another gripe. Im getting real tired of undertale fic where they get to the surface and a human oc just keeps going on and on about how nice they are because they accept monsters right away, or monsters treat them like they put the sun in the sky for being nice. like they just write about how great they are for showing common human decency to someone even though "monsters are scary" or "they look really different but i dont care, and that makes me special". Its like, do you think this about humans too?
undertale fics that constantly refer to kisses involving sans, papyrus and/or gaster as "skeleton kisses" like, yeah, okay, they are skeletons and they are kissing and it's different than human kissing, but that isn't new or particularly forgettable information like, seriously, if i click on a ship fic with the skellies and it's not a human au, i'm taking the skeletons being skeletons while kissing as a given
i think its cause it flows easier than "they clanked their teeth awkwardly and it was weird" but yeah i agree its annoying
yeah, it would, but once i've read at least one instance of "skeleton kiss" in the fic (or before i've got to it), i'm already picturing awkward skeleton teeth-clanking when they kiss 'cause, well, i already know that skeletons don't have lips and that to do something resembling kissing, they would probably have to clank their teeth together. the hot new craze :0
(Frankly I have no idea why skeletons would kiss at all. just let them do forehead bonks and nuzzles as affection. Makes much more sense. Transformers fanfic found ways around kisses with characters that legitemately don't have a fucking face at all so what's your excuse UT?)

...so i had a dream that i checked back up on the transformers fic with the inflated kudos and we determined that it was a glitch after all because now it had about 3 million kudos why my brain decided to dream about that, i couldn't tell you
