I'm considering trying to move out of my parents' house under my own steam - advice/logistics?

In this case I am definitely ineligible. I'm not even autistic.

I think I will have to face the fact that the government does not wish to offer me help in this instance, unless I were to quit out of uni permanently, which would intrinsically be essentially be giving up on my future and any hope of having a degree or meaningful career in film.

maybe you could try living with someone who works nights, or is otherwise very busy with their school/work/something, where you'd have the benefits of alone time without the financial burden of actually living alone?

This strikes me as the sort of thing that is difficult to arrange in practice.

I'd need somebody I could trust if I was living with someone. Preferably somebody who I knew prior to moving in with them. This seems unlikely to manifest.

Blargh, who am I kidding. I'm not disabled, I'm more a mopey unpleasant loner with a self-destruction complex. :V

But your needs may manifest differently to my own. Just because I am autistic and depressed and do not meet the criteria, does not mean you won't because you're 'only' depressed.

Which is exactly what I did. Same sector of degree and all. 5 years later, I'm still stuck in the family home (though this is due to not actively looking for housing until late last year). I would not recommend this, but it's ultimately your choice. You could sign up to your local council's housing list. Council houses/flats are cheaper than most private rental, and usually in good condition.

Honestly, I'd go for the shit garage if it wasn't for the fact that I'm fairly sure it doesn't have a power outlet.

True, but looking through those criteria further convinces me that any assessor would be unlikely to conclude that I fit the bill.

From what I hear, it takes a considerable length of time for these things to go through. But if you know otherwise let me know the details, aha...

What are the requirements for all this "student" housing, I wonder? What do I need in order to know if I'm qualified to stay in it? I am after all registered to a university... I don't really know how this stuff works...

Yeah, it does take a while to go through, especially if you already have a place to live that is not dilapidated. Although councils are obligated to offer places that are marginally better than a garage, with power outlets and a sturdy door, and usually even a couple of windows. And there is Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction to consider to help you pay your rent, whatever kind of property you find.

Do you know how I would go about looking into this? Is it only available to me in the council area where I currently reside, or could I apply anywhere?

If you're registered to a university, most student housing providers will take you, but it usually requires you to do a little 'shopping around' to make sure it suits you and you can stay there outside of term time if need be. Also, there will usually be housemates.

I wonder, if I were to get a bedsit or whatever, in a house shared with others, would it be acceptable to simply lock myself in my room all day or would I be expected to actually interact with people?

Because I'd be happy to live in a single room and even share a bathroom if I didn't have to interact with or talk to anybody else there as a condition to rent it.

Usually, the council try to house you within your current county, but you can specify differently, and I know that my council's housing list, at least, also lists properties from the next county over.

That would really depend on your housemates, which is why it might be best to meet them and talk with them before you move in. Strictly speaking, yes, it is acceptable, nobody can force you to interact with your housemates as a term of rental, but perhaps try to find a place with other introverts?

I live in London, which is divided amongst different borough councils, although I'd be fine to live anywhere as long as it was still within reasonable bounds of the city. I'm not sure how things work in that setting.

This is the issue. I really don't want... I mean. I don't see this working out unless it was somebody I already knew..

Iiiiiiii just discovered utility costs and council tax.

Friends, I am truly boned. My own money won't go anywhere, even via the cheapest options. I'd have to work full time. I don't know what to do with what the thing

Just found the best option I've come across yet, unfortunately rent terms stipulates that you're not allowed to be on benefits. -_-. So if I did that then any benefit action you wanted to suggest would be void, Pumpkageist. Still, I'll keep it open on a tab. On one of my many, many tabs.
