Lissa shrugs. "After you mocked that other person for being sexually harassed and abused, I really thought you probably didn't have much in the way of feelings."

for the LAST TIME, it wasnt mocking, it was pointing out that it wasnt relevant to me in the SLIGHTEST. because it wasnt.

"I find it difficult to believe you were unaware of the fact that your phrasing made it sound as though the experience were rather trivial and possibly the result their own inadequacies rather than the act of a fiend who treats people worse than food." Lissa folds her hands.

maybe thats because you barely know me and are making cruel judgments about me anyways.

"How am I to determine what sort of person you are and what you are likely to do, other than by observing you? You can't just ask people what they are like. Even when they're honest, they usually still don't know."

but youre DELIBERATELY misinterpreting the things i say, so clearly your way isnt working.

  7. Lissa Beijada-Pines

Lissa cocks her head to one side and watches him, as if he's a particularly odd bird that has perched outside of her window.

Because he really sort of is.

"How can I be deliberate about misinterpreting something? If someone misunderstands what you say, you have failed to communicate your message. Often this is the result of cultural differences; for instance, 'the embrace of the Dark Mother' means something entirely different to the Beijada than it apparently means to you. This is the fault of no-one. However, most people who accidentally say things that are cruel are quick to apologise for their ignorance or thoughtlessness." She raises an eyebrow. "If you'd been horrified when I said that you were mocking the other party to that conversation and rushed to assure me that you meant something else, and apologised to the other party, or even if you'd just asked me what was wrong with what you said, I'd have a different opinion. In my experience, though, when people get defensive of the things they say, and refuse to acknowledge that the things they say could have hurt someone, they meant exactly what I think they probably said, and they just don't want to admit it."

She purses her lips. "My beloved is untroubled by guilt or remorse, but when he hurts someone he did not intend to hurt, he makes apologies and restitution, because doing stupid things is embarrassing, and hurting people by accident without making amends just gets you enemies you didn't need. I love him, but he's no pillar of morality. If he comprehends this, why can't you?"

it means you KNOW what it actually means but you choose to act like i meant the OTHER meaning. i dont think i should have to apologize for something being quote-unquote 'cruel' when the only way you could THINK it was cruel is if you deliberately spun it that way to make me look bad.
how exactly are 'getting defensive of the things they say' and 'rushing to assure that you meant something else' any different, eh? im sorry that im not groveling at your feet because you know how to make someone look bad, i guess. who do you think wrote the book on deliberate misinterpretation? cant slip one by me.
blubbering like a baby because you accidentally hurt the feelings of some random person you dont care about is even more embarrassing.

"I'm an alien. Why are you so sure that I know what you 'actually meant'? I can think of no situation in which I or anyone I know would say the thing you said without intending it to cause harm; and frankly, I can't think of a situation in which I or anyone I know would say it at all, although I am aware you can't possibly know how shocking I find such behaviour."

    She frowns.

"They're exactly the opposite?" Lissa shakes her head. "Defending a thing you have said involves asserting that you and you alone get to determine the meanings of words and that nobody else has any business being offended because your intentions are more important than anyone else's feelings. Assuring someone that you didn't mean what they think you said involves being sorry that you ever did anything to make them think something so terrible and that you'll never say that again now that you understand how awful it sounds."

"Ah, I see." Lissa smiles, but not sweetly. "Because you 'wrote the book' on deliberate misinterpretation, you believe I am doing what you would do. Pacifica Lalonde's mother explained to me that this is called 'projection'. Most of us do it to some degree, but you've really gone quite too far with it."

"You are aware that an apology need not involve tears or blubbering? It's possible to apologise with dignity. It's more dignified, in fact, to make a simple apology than it is to stand there yammering into the wind about how we're all stupid because we think words mean things." She frowns. "I know there are many reasons it's no longer done on Earth, but societies where people have duels are so much politer."

Three, You're both too much of a grub and too much of an alien to move where I am usually looking for conversation partners so buzz off.

Again, not an alien fucker, but LIKE the charming attempt is noted.
