Ford shakes his head. He unfortunately lacks the patience some of the other Fords who frequent the Rave display.

"Mabel," he says, "is it difficult, living with your uncle?"

 

Sure! Why?

 

"I don't think it should be," says Ford. "The kids like to call me Darth Stanford, and say that I'm the local Dark Lord. I'm not afraid to fuck people up if they need fucking up. A lot of people in town and in the government are scared as hell of me. Especially the government, because they know I know the shit they tried to make me do, and I know where the bodies are buried. I do what I want to do, and so does my brother. I go all over the multiverse, and I have money in places that no-one on Earth can touch, and I am going to fuck up the Condesce. There are a lot of people who will tell you I'm a sociopathic bastard. And in some respects they are not wrong. But we protect our family."

 

-She smiles twice as hard.-

No, uh, you misunderstand! It's just hard work. I don't want to leave.

 

"Well, it would really make me happy if you could just tell me more about the work," Ford offers. "Things are grim right now. But Alex, Mason and Jezebel were happy kids. And so were their friends. Because we made sure of it, Lissa and I."

 

"And Carla and Stan," Alex points out. "He runs the shows." She grins. "He's also in the mob."

 

Well, I've got to run the shows, and keep up with the schoolwork, and sometimes Great-Uncle Stanford is gone for a while and Wendy watches us, and I make the clothes for the shows, and it's a lot of work! But it'll all pay off by the end of the summer!

 

"What's going to happen at the end of the summer?" Ford asks, and glances at @Wilhelm--does this make sense to him?

 

-She shrugs, still smiling.-

 

He mouths the words 'nothing good' to the other, frowning and shaking his head.

Ford nods.

 

-Mab poofs out from the rave yet again in a crackle of power.-

 

"Let me guess," says Mason. "All the gates between the worlds will open, and our souls will be filled with light, and everyone will be peaceful and kind forever. Whether they want to, or not. There will be no more tears--"

His jaw drops.

 

"She does that," says Alex.

 

Lissa shudders heavily, and her eyes widen. "It wasn't you, Stanford. It wasn't an accident and you didn't do it. My sibling came to kill me, when I was running tests to stabilise the portal, because I became an apostate and a mother, and the body you found was his, and Will--"

 

Ford stares at her.

"Will tried to open it?"

 

"I didn't let him."

 

Mason takes a deep breath. "What if the reason mediums can't see her is that she isn't a ghost, not that she isn't real?"
