I read a fic the other day that had a lot of surprise graphic scenes and sure enough once i got to the end of a chapter the warning would be there. Sort of a "better to ask forgiveness than permission" sort of thing. It was so stupid

That's almost worse than not having the warnings at all, because it shows the author knows that people could really use those warnings but decided against it because [train noises]

Occasionally I see a fic with sex scenes that aren't essential to the plot, and the author realizes that some folks aren't interested, so they do a quick note saying [if you want to skim past the porn, search for (the start of the non-porn section)] It's not the only solution possible, but it's one I'm content with.

Did they at least say in the opening note that there were warnings in the end note for people to check if they needed to?

A better way to do this without spoiling the people who don't need warnings is "Scroll to the bottom for warnings", IMO.

Yeah, that's what I do, at least in the current fic I'm writing (I put broad warnings in the tags, but putting specific ones in the tags would be kinda misleading since most of the stuff worth warning for is discussion of things that happened in the backstory of the fic rather than stuff that happens in the fic itself, and besides, this way people can skip chapters but still read the fic if that's how they wanna do things).

Eh, I disagree, I appreciate three "And stop reading NOW" implied by them. it can be disruptive but unless the whole chapter is the warned for content...

I like warnings at the front of chapters with "skip to [x] if you can't handle this" because otherwise I end up having flashbacks to authors having arguments with themselves in author's notes in the middle of fanfics.

i rather like the ones that make a symbol before the content, like the author goes "there's a * before the scene and after the scene if you wanna skip it"

I think it depends on the fic, too, and the content. Like, if it's intense and confined to a specific section of a chapter, I've seen people write notes that say "The section that might be a problem starts at "Phrase" and ends at "other phrase." I like that, it's not disruptive, and so I've borrowed it once or twice too.

At the same time, though, from a writing perspective, if there's a bunch of prospective trouble things in a chapter, I know I would get overwhelmed if I tried to be that specific for all of them.

In one of my fandoms, most of the characters use aliases for security reasons. It's specifically stated that many of them don't even know each other's real names, and even if they did, they're smart enough not to go flinging them around willy-nilly.

You can guess what happens in fic, like, all the time.

I've started seeing people use PWP/Plot What Plot as a tag for "I started writing this multi-chapter fic without an outline, and I don't know where it's going" and just... noooo that does not mean what you think it means. So much potential for confusion >.<
