I'm trying to recall if I've ever seen this outside of a movie and then it occurs to me that I've done this, but what I was actually trying to say wasn't so much 'darling' as 'oh, you....'

'Anata' is also commonly used as a polite pronoun for addressing other people when you don't even know their names (it's not keigo-polite, and shop staff or waiters wouldn't use it, but a person just being a person might very well, especially since 'otaku' has acquired Other Connotations--and it's what Google Translate will usually produce.)

It's the tone of voice that makes it intimate.

Still funny though, because now I'm imagining her saying it in that tone of voice and it's easy to do that.

 

Yeah it's hilarious because I could see Giffany slipping into the intimate usages very fast.
