So I actually thought I'd got something wrong and the whole thing was probably my fault, even though my brother kept saying that there was no way those calculations were that far off, not with all three of us going over them..."

"Until we ran into her father on ai-Talas, they probably thought she was already dead." He smiles at Norm. "You couldn't have known that, don't worry, it's just...not a bit of this surprises me."

 

"You didn't...meet her when she was ten, I hope?"

 

Yeah, but I think I heard someone say something once about how they'd kill everyone in the Pines household if she had babies but she's pregnant now and we haven't heard a peep from them yet.

 

Ford cracks up. "Oh, no. She was twenty-one when I met her, and had been living on Pennarion for eleven years with a foster-mother who was a Tempter and a Cereuti foster-sister. I met her in school."

"She was supposed to be someone important to them and it failed, and I doubt they ever even think about her now. She was a tool that broke. Lissa was apparently useful to them for quite a while before she decided to fuck the hell off. Of course they had more invested in her. And after what they did to her? They're not going to think her breeding is even a possibility, because they surely don't know about Steven. If they did, I am 100% certain that he would be much higher on their hit list than any of us, just because of who he is."

 

Ford grins at Ford. "I was her target," he says, with a lift of his eyebrows that's just this side of obscene. "And I was the one who turned her. Not that she didn't cooperate heartily."

 

... oh. Huh. This is the first time you've mentioned that their space station is its own dimension. Did they find it like that or did they make it?

If they made it its own dimension, well... they are more powerful than I thought. I mean, even I can't make little dimensions and I'm... well, you know... pretty overpowered.
