Transformers' life-cycles are such that we require a... sort of 'rest period' between minor death and rebirth. We are made as such, in the current turning, that unframed defenseless sparks cannot safely exist in a material plane-- but neither does physical matter hold up very well in immaterial planes, like the one we're in right now. Notice how if everyone forgets about an object here it vanishes?

Because the sparks cannot remain on our material plane-- we'll have to find Vector and perhaps Quintus if you want an explanation for that-- they cannot be protected by currently-framed mechs. There are dangers even in immaterial planes, though, so they do still need guardians! And so there are certain mechs, like your caer and some of our siblings, who are capable of spending long periods of time in immaterial spaces to make sure the sparks stay safe while they rest and wait for their new frames.
