Crying over cosplay

What IvyLB said. Many moons ago, I took a stage makeup class and used greasepaint on top of Aquacolor for Clown Day and it worked well enough (though I didn't have it on for very long).

BUT while I don't know your makeup experience, I have to say for the record that greasepaint feels awful, I'm pretty sure you have to go to clown college to learn the arcane ritual required to make it actually set, and I would recommend you just use water-activated makeup.

 

Fucktons of powder (papping motions, not swiping) and hairspray (or actual setting spray if you want to be fancy about it) iirc was the arcane ritual, but I don't actually use greasepaint bc I have overly sensitive skin and greasepaint physically hurts me.

 

I know how to do it, I've just never managed to make it work. Two years ago I did cosplays with creme (creme! not even the full greasepaint!) makeup, spent like a half an hour each day with the powder and the spray, and it still got everywhere and itched like hell. All I really remember about the Greasepaint Encounter was that class wasn't long enough to really set it, and that it was so heavy I felt like my face was melting off.

 

Fair enough! :P In that case I recommend a virgin sacrifice to the makeup devil :P

 

So I'm planning to cosplay the female Vogue Elf from the latest TAZ arc, and hoo boy I'm already suffering just planning on what I need to get/make. I've never actually made something for my cosplay that's more complex than painting something from a template, so planning to make fancy boots and possibly fabric painting is already making my head spin.

But the thing that's already bringing on the wailing and gnashing of teeth is the fact that I'm pretty dang curvy and all the cute body suits I'd buy are not meant for people with my body type. I'm determined to find the perfect body suit but like....god dang...

At least elf ears have long since been perfected for other fandoms, lmao

 

Ugh, I feel your pain. Evey once in a while I think about getting a body suit/catsuit, and then I remember I have a hell of a time finding dresses(/pants/shirts...) that fit me, since I'm like three 'standard' sizes at once :/ Good luck and godspeed with your search.

 

Yeah, exactly. I'm thinking about this one because it's really cute and kind of has that, like, fashionable look to it? But its in forever 21 which, while I am in fact 21 I am wary of whether or not their large would even come close?? but anything that WOULD fit me isnt what im looking for??? hell

also uhhh has anyone ever had any experience with waxing for cosplay, or other hair removal experiences. because im sat here like "well i want to do this slightly skimpy cosplay but im pretty fuzzy would the pain be worth it"

 

i've done waxing in general, although not for cosplay. it does take longer for the hair to regrow after waxing, so you won't have stubble after a day, which is nice. the pain is.... hard to gauge? everyone's pain tolerance is different.

i've literally bled while waxing, but also was like 'eh that didn't hurt that bad' so... yeah. it's hard to say on that front. i'd say maybe wax a little bit of your arm or leg hair and see how you handle it before deciding that's the way you wanna go

 

does anyone know a light-but-durable material i can use to make a magikarp prop?

size wise is probably going to be 1.5-2 feet mouth to tail tip. it's gotta be light because im going to be carrying it around all day, and durable enough that it won't get crushed by accident.

ive already mostly ruled out making it plush (weight), couch foam (weight), paper mache (durability, weight if i make it durable). ive considered cardboard and am going to make my prototype out of that. it doesnt need to have stuffing if it can hold it's shape.

the problem im having is once you make something durable, it gets heavier

 

i recommend styrofoam
It's super light weight and carveable.

 

i'd have to cover it in something (to get rid of styrofoam texture) and then paint. idk if would that add too much weight?

 

probably not? papermache isn't heavy either and the easiest way to cover styrofoam for texture reasons usually.

 

Aaaaaaand at that scale you might actually be able to carve the styrofoam with a hollow in the middle and a closure and stuff for a purse! I did that with a planet globe for when i cosplayed LOLAR

Uhhhhhhh just exactoknives and artist's scalpels i think????? Um. I'm sure there's tutorials for how to work with styrofoam in a more sophisticated way than what i did out there. Planetoids being just balls made my purse super easy in that regard haha...

Does anyone have advice on how to affix something large-ish to painted skin? Specifically my forehead? I'm cosplaying Pearl at Sakuracon and I'd like to know what works best. Would spirit gum be fine, do you think?

 

depending on how heavy it is you might be able to get away with just liquid latex (which is cheaper) but spirit gum is the strong stuff and itll def hold it down

 

I still have a fair bit of spirit gum left over from my Amethyst cosplay (the main difficulty there was placement), so I'll go for that. Thanks! <3
