"What are you two talking about, I already had this reserved!!!"

Moss is also kind of an Eh-thiest, but likes the headmaster's questions.

Clearly much better. Probably better communication between staff and students.

OK so I just realized something that kinda bothers me but if it bothers no one else I can shut up about it. Are Raven and Ravenclaw too close?

In terms of names? Probably. In terms of character, I figured that Ravenclaw is a little closer to jackrabbit.

Alternatives: Owl? We could go crow? Some kinda lizard?

I like Raven, even though it's close to Ravenclaw. I mean, I don't think any of us even really thought about it until just now. Probably the only person in-universe who cares is the brit teacher :P

Just goes to show why I play a lot of mega fussy characters- I'm mega fussy. If it doesn't bother y'all I can put it out of my head, it was just one of those things I realized and went "oh noooooo."
(And yes, Miles would have many an under the breath comment about it)

i initially proposed jackrabbit as the ravenclaw-equivalent, but folks ended up wanting six dorms instead of four houses, so turtle and raven were added. raven is more esoteric-mysterious, jackrabbit is more curious-clever. i don't think the name similarity bothers me, tbh.

Well it's got a Hogwarts-trained Brit for a teacher, so sure why not?

The official position of the Sage Canyon Academy is that: "We have an aeons old eldritch configuration of space-time for a Headmaster, why wouldn't you be accepted. Cower in fear before the endless process of the shifting universe."

Also: I appear to be working for most of the weekend, but it seems like we have a fair amount of details hammered out. Anyone want to start the RP thread? And if anyone wanders in late we/they can accommodate suitably? (Since I might wander in tomorrow sometime)

I haven't forum rped in years so I really don't know the best way to start. Are we going to start with students arriving for the school year? (Also- for the rest of the staff members should we make up names as we go, or leave them ambiguous in case anyone wants to join as one of them later?)

I´d go for arriving to school, gives everyone a chance to get to know each other.

i would think a lot of the classes would be grade based, while others would be skill level based.
for example, at my school, english and history are the same for everyone in the same grade, but i have algebra while a grade mate has calculus because skill level, or a tenth grader will be in greek 1 if it's their first year.

Yeah, classes as a set curriculum for first years or so, add different emphases as you continue through school...

That's a good question, though, re: dorms.
    Hrrm.
Either in your first year, you get assigned randomly to a dorm, depending on beds available...or you get assigned a mentor for the year and assigned to their dorm.

The mentor, I think, helps with not keeping youngsters isolated, too.

    That work?

I vote mentor, that pulls in the "adoption" thing from earlier. That means we're gonna have to pair everyone up though. Or just have long chains of mentoring. (Actually, I love the idea of long complicated student mentor trees.)

SCA is probably a pretty big place- the first couple years can get their own dorm, and then spend time rooming in the higher dorms for a few days at a time (both to get them used to the different dorms, and to incentivize older students to behave themselves)

Spending time with mentoring students makes a lot of sense too.

(Side note: earlier today I was SO tempted to writ and record a WTNV type Welcome to Sage Canyon Academy.)

I love the idea of long chains of mentoring, too, though.
Like, some 12 year old comes in, gets mentored up to some 15 year old. 15 year old's mentor has just graduated, sends the fifteen year old life advice and later helps them out with getting a job.

Imagine the weird crazy lines of mentor-students, "oh, i know them because they mentored my friend, and then my friend mentored their boss' kid..."

I feel like if someone has a really complicated junior/senior year, they get the chance to waive mentoring, but most people don't.

I like the idea too. I can be a little timid in RP sometimes, and, well, I'm coming out of a slump, so having someone my character can talk to might make things easier.
