So I keep chatting about all the weird shit I've seen on forums, and I could tell some stories, but... What if we made a game of it? Post your suggestions for new forum rules or policies. Go ahead, come up with your best shot. I'll tell you how your proposed policy or rule works out. It is very slightly possible that there might be some Wishing Game to it... NOTE: No, I won't actually do the things. I'll just describe them.
in defamation honor of one forum I've been on: "but what if we made a rule about using proper grammar and spelling?"
You're right. By popular demand, we'll remove that person, since so many people want them gone. New social protocol! If you lose an argument, just get a few friends together and demand that the other party be banned. I mean, we can hardly show favoritism by only banning that one person, this other person is just as unpopular. Congratulations! The new all-forum mafia game is up and running, with people being voted off as "probably bad" on a daily basis.
I don't see what the problem is. We had every reason to ban thegrimsqueaker, who unambiguously said "a rule that discriminates against people for whom English is a second language", when it clearly should have been "a rule which discriminates against people for whom English is a second language", because it was expressing a comment about the rule, not specifying which rule was meant. And the D&D forum people talking about "silver good dragons" rather than "good silver dragons" were clearly just trolling, and had nothing to offer the forum.
everything got deleted because someone was having a meltdown, leaving only a single forum which consisted entirely of ads for herbal supplements. it is unclear whether this is an improvement.
This isn't quite as awesome as the Rules Wiki (yes really), but it's pretty straightforward. And I do mean Straight Forward; it's not super hard to get a slight majority of votes from a Majority Group in favor of banning a minority. And if you can ban smaller groups first, you can reduce the number of people who will object.
You have to make five (5) shitposts to earn the right to make one (1) post with actual content. To earn the right to create a thread of your own, you have to inspire a derail in another thread that lasts for a minimum of two (2) pages.
I've seen that done for mods, with the intent being that mods would only post non-mod stuff on personal accounts, so they could prevent anyone from thinking they were biased. That worked... very very badly. I think the problem is, merely requiring them to have subaccounts isn't enough. We have to require using them. But what do we require using them for? I think they should be per-forum so we don't have to worry about people having a bad reputation follow them between forums. That sounds fair.
So what I'm hearing is that I haven't robotted this shiny, new, unsullied thread yet, and that needs to be fixed :V
