@cryptoThelematrix, while I agree broadly with a lot of your points, I keep finding myself feeling that you're judging either people who do play horrible people on a conversational basis or people who are more uncomfortable reading about sex than about violence. Is this something you're trying to say, or am I misreading you?

 

i managed to trigger myself with that character and said as much at the time

now leave me the fuck out of this im trying to disengage because i can't talk any further without going into my trauma and i dont want to do that.

Nobody is trying to force you to talk about your trauma. Plenty of us have trauma of our own.

Actually, @Ipuntya , I had one more question. I thought you weren't particularly close with John? I also thought he didn't like telling sites when he left them. Where'd you hear this? I'm only asking here and not in PMs bc you hate PMing.

 

I don't judge people for writing darkfic whether they're trying to work out their issues or just love darkfic. I don't have to read it.

I kind of do judge people who just drop a horrific rapist, serial sexual harasser, child abuser, etc, into an RP without asking the other people who are playing if they're okay with having to put up with that. Not because I think it's morally wrong ever to play those characters but because I think it's fucking rude to assume that everyone is okay with it.

Even if you ARE trying to work out your issues, maybe I don't want to be involved with that.

I don't judge people for having triggers.

But I do think that something is really very, very wrong with our society as a whole that the default position is that ultraviolent and cruel scenes are just considered to be fine whereas consensual, mutually pleasurable interactions are treated as far more taboo.

hrmmm i've been kind of avoiding posting about this because i am. a huge weenie and very conflict-averse, so fair warning i am liable to scamper off like a frightened deer but.

it looks like my post is what started this whole shebang, and i want to apologize for that. because i think i mis-judged what was and was not appropriate, and i made myself as well as others uncomfortable in hindsight. i don't think i should have posted the thing, and i should definitely have added the "nsfw" warning onto the spoiler, just in case.

i'm not going to argue about what other people should have done--just myself and how i feel about my actions. in the future, i'm going to be keeping my posts more strictly safe for work. i apologize to FL, and ipuntya, and anyone else who i made feel unsafe or awkward with my post.

 

One thing I want to know.

I'm feeling an implication that FL left because of this. Nobody's said it but it feels like the elephant in the room.

Does anyone actually think this is the case? Or know anything?

I'd like to go forward knowing for sure whether anyone is actually thinking this or if it's just my paranoia.

 

I'm... kinda suspicious of that. I'd support his reasons for leaving whatever they were, but a lot of other stuff has been going on.

IDK, I think the actual shitstorm got started by my post, and I wouldn't assume your post made anyone feel unsafe, because I honestly don't think that it did.

even if i didn't upset anyone, i'm not super happy with myself, so i think i'm just going to err on the side of caution wrt my own roleplaying from here on out.

This is how I feel, and also why I feel it should have been 'let FL speak for themselves or not speak, that is THEIR call'. The problem is, if you DO have an issue you need to speak for you and only you (general you). I understand the fear that some minors have (I had it as a kid) but the problem is unless that minor is speaking directly to you to speak for them you cannot mind read them. Not only is it fucked up it also breaks the lines of communication which are heavily important in roleplay and in minor / adult interactions.

Like, all I can think of is how my s/o nearly got taken away from his mother because he was covered in bruises. Everyone assumed the bruises were from neglect / abuse, and never asked him about it or his mother. A very stark comparison but the point still fucking stands.

Just because someone is laying on the ground screaming in pain doesn't mean that the guy beside them who had been juggling knives is at fault.

That is what keeps ticking me off. It's ticking me off because now my brain bugs can't work out where the lines are really. You can't just say 'well just don't do x' because what else aren't you telling me? I'm probably going to just not change what I do because at this point, due to the fact that no one who has brought objections up has full on stated at what level they view things / where things should be, I have become quite spiteful.

 

I have a feeling that a lot of us don't really know why this all blew up so fast? Understanding where each of us were coming from might help?

 

i am not going to change my behaviour as a result of this. if swirl changes the rules, i will abide by the changes, of course, but in the absence of that, i am not to going to do anything differently.

 

In the future, I'll probably be more careful about spoiling genitals now that it's been mentioned. Other than that I've pretty much said all I have to say on the issue and I also have TCHGB ignored. @ me if someone would like to talk about me or my characters, but otherwise I'm ducking out.

 

I know why I got so mad so fast. It's because I often feel like the biggest lightweight on Earth, not least because my darkness tolerance used to be a lot higher, and 2/3 of the people calling me out have written things that I found super upsetting and the general response was that it didn't violate stated rules, and I should ignore the poster or pretend my character didn't see it even if it was happening while I was online and posting.
