i use "winner" when "like," "agree," "informative" and/or "useful" feel too weak to express how much i like a post. and when someone comes up with a really sick burn.

    kmoss whoops

i like to use winner when people ask what "winner" is for, so

i guess for snarky bullshit reasons
but it's a nice thing, so it's the equivalent of giving a post-pun shit-eating grin without even having to think of a pun first

I usually use winner for posts I think are award-worthy in some way, like a particularly hilarious joke or a story of personal accomplishment. Or to be silly. Possibly other cases as well if it seems like the thing to do.

My phone screen is such a size that [Witnessed] makes a second row of buttons to press, and I've accidentally witnessed a few things I meant to like. Alas, no extra witnessed farts.

Mostly I'm saying this for posterity, rather than a request that it be considered in decision making. With varying size devices, there's not gonna be a single nice and neat number of options that have some range to them but also all only fit on a single row.

I think we should cut informative and just keep useful. It seems weird to have two fairly similar ones when we've already pared down the available ratings to a smaller number of options. Of the two, useful is the more versatile.

there are things i'd use informative for but not use useful for, and vice-versa. and i like informative as a way to say i appreciate new info or a new contribution to a conversation without necessarily endorsing it 100%. and useful is for if something is practical, whether i already knew it or not.

I personally disagree mostly on the grounds of of informative being relatively value neutral, while useful has an inherent value-judgement to me. Idk, I already struggle with externalizing half of my self-worth, if we are gonna cut one of the two and no mashup words are happening, I'd prefer if we cut the one that lends itself to being used as a direct comparison scale for self loathing spirals?
(edit: brain, can we please stop randomly substituting words that start with similar letters?)

Oh cool, I've figured out why I like Useful less: if I think something is useful, then I have some idea how I want to use it, and I want to connect / show my appreciation by rambling a little about it. My preferred reaction is the rambling.

If something's informative for me, it's likely new information that I need to think on for a while before I can respond. Clicking informative gives the poster the quick confirmation that I've seen and appreciated the info, rather than leaving them hanging while I process it. Less versatile, but it has a specific use for me.

Re: winner, I've had people use it on posts where I was extremely happy about something and I've used it on things which people are clearly proud of. I like it a lot but I don't find it necessary.
