@esotericPrognosticator i'm interested! i have approximately three months' worth of experience with 5e (as a player, not a DM). but i'm also willing to step aside if someone else wants the spot; i have my other d&d group to fall back on for d&d funtimes.

@NevermorePoe @Derpyfishnoms @Helen of Boy @garden HELL YEAH LET'S DO THIS THING ahem, I mean, thank you for your interest! Helen and Garden, like I said, I'm perfectly okay with running a big party (...I'd probably prefer a 5+ member party, if only for the interaction opportunities and the diversity of PC classes), so I don't anticipate your being shouldered out of the group, and tbh I'd like a couple veteran players my first time 'round who can provide comparative feedback on my DMing.

anyway, first things first: what character classes are you guys interested in? probably some of you don't have the Players' Handbook, which has all the deets on classes, but there's an official set of basic rules here. (fyi, there are a ton of super-cool classes that aren't in there. in alphabetical order: barbarian, bard, druid, monk, paladin, ranger, sorcerer, and warlock.) if you're new and have questions about any of 'em, please ask away! tbh it'd be easiest for us all if you can get your paws on the PHB somehow (though it's not essential at this stage), but if you can't, hit me up and I can PM you whatever you need.

ALSO, JUST TO BE CLEAR, CHATTING ABOUT CLASSES IS A SUPER PRELIMINARY PLANNING STAGE, AND THERE'S STILL ROOM FOR A BUNCH OF OTHER PLAYERS. PLEASE ENTER MY LOVING AND ONLY SLIGHTLY MOIST EMBRACE.*

*no hug required for entry, is self-deprecating joke

If you want veteran players, I might be available. Only started 5e last year, but I've been playing for 5+ years in 3.5/Pathfinder and 4.
Would you be open to races from Volo's Guide to Monsters?

@The Frood Abides hell yeah I would! I have it myself, and I assume you do too, so it should be no trouble. the monstrous races laid out therein would be a-okay too, if you wanna play a kobold or what-have-you. whatcha thinkin'?

@esotericPrognosticator Aasimar, firbolg, or tabaxi were the main ones I was thinking of -- aasimar and firbolg could easily integrate into a party of more common races (since aasimar look human and firbolgs can if they have to) and fit existing Realms lore pretty well. And tabaxi have that sidebar about mysterious emigrants from Maztica, so it's not out of the question that one would be seen on the Sword Coast.

Classes I've been wanting to try in 5e include druid, monk, rogue, and sorcerer. I'll hold off on committing to a concept until you've decided more details about character creation.

I don't have a preference, really, but starting at low levels is often easier for new DMs as well as new players, since the monsters and PCs are both less complicated to run. So maybe Hoard of the Dragon Queen?

bards are quality and I encourage you to make one! my one stipulation is that your bard must, at some point in the campaign, make at least one pun. it is my Official DM Opinion that a) any PC is much enriched if they make puns and b) bards especially so. ;P

yeah, I'm sure tabaxi drop by every now and then. they probably turn heads anywhere outside of big cities, but this campaign doesn't rely too much on PCs keeping a low profile, so feel free to go for it! as a general note, though (and this applies to all players): don't feel limited to the racial personalities laid out in the rulebooks. if you want to play a stereotypical gold-loving honor-bound dwarf or insatiably curious tabaxi, go ahead, but I'm not a fan of the core materials' slapping uniform personalities on entire races.

...what sort of details are there to decide?

yeahhh, sounds like good advice, thanks. so if no one has any objections, we'll be starting at first level with Hoard of the Dragon Queen.

(for future reference, in posts where I'm replying to specific players, anything applicable to all players will be assholishly bolded so it's easy to spot.)

note re: religious aspects of the setting: I'm not gonna screw around with the adventures' preexisting cultures too much, but, well. I dunno about y'all, but I don't particularly want to limit the campaign's religions to Faerûn's preestablished gods. so if you've a religious character and want to call upon some god(s) of your own (be they of your own creation or from a preexisting tradition), go right ahead. I was also thinking of importing Lois McMaster Bujold's incredibly elegant godly quintity from her book The Curse of Chalion (mostly because I think it's really cool) as a major religious tradition in this setting, if that's a-okay with y'all. hit me up for details on that tradition if you're curious. :)

...If you're seeking lots of players, then I would love to make a character and be involved. I opted for popcorn.gif so as to make sure newbies have a chance.

    Not a social character tho.

Ability scores and equipment, mainly. 5e has point buy as the default, but some people like 4d6best3 (or 3d6 in order if you're a sadist). Also whether we roll for starting gold or take the default level 1 equipment.

Of course, now you make me want to throw out all four of my nebulous concepts and play a cleric of the Bastard. Cazaril and Ista are fucking rad. (would He take Trickery or Death domain, you think?)

I love her, but yes. It's a good thing I opted for stupidly high deception instead of the other social skills. A character more on the intimidation or persuasion sides of things would have been even more rough.

Playing high int characters is basically futile. I have never solved a puzzle in my goddamn life and no I don't know proper military tactics but I am playing a character with an int of 20! I know the DM can't go "well heres the solution" but also :I

lots of players is good! please join us!! no social interaction required!!!

I'mma say roll 4d6 and take the best three, allocating as you see fit for ability scores, and your choice whether you roll for gold to buy supplies or choose from the defaults.

DO IIIIIIIIT PLEASE DO IT EVERY CAMPAIGN NEEDS A CLERIC OF THE BASTARD
or a paladin. or even a warlock, since death magic seems pretty "deal with the devil"-y to me, plus the whole saint deal is kinda. "hi, I'm giving up my agency for you to work miracles through me, god, what a deal!"
also, yes, they are all fucking rad. I am also a particular fan of Iselle. I'm still angry that Caz turned out to be the Daughter's saint instead of the Bastard's tbh but
and I'd say He'd take either, honestly. you could make a case for Him taking a lot of domains, since, y'know, He's a jack-of-all-the-trades-no-one-else-wants. :P dunno if He's the kind of trickster god the PHB seems to assume, though; probably closer to Death. Lawful Neutral Death, I'd say. if you're going to make one of His clerics (DO IT), go ahead and make 'em Death domain if you want, it's fine by me.

So far in my D&D career I've played a fighter and a druid. I'm sorta interested in maybe a wizard or sorcerer?

I have a PDF of the Player's Handbook that I can email to whoever needs it, btw. I'm also A-OK with starting at first level.

    Also, here's a better-formatted version of the 5e player's handbook's spell list!

Man I've really been wanting to play in a high fantasy game (I'm the only DM in my tabletop group that does a wide variety of games) but on the other hand I already spend 1 day of the week playing and 2 days dming, and I've been having trouble with that.
....If theres space left can I go down as a maybe? I really want to but. Man.
(Character concept I've been wanting to play for a while: orc girl who ran away to become a wizard or druid)

I love how many sites like this exist, with dice-rolling resources for the rper without physical dice. Partway down the page is for the option to click once for the usual 4d6 drop lowest array, with a drop down menu for some of the other frequent policies.
