The thing with characterations though, when writing AUs and all that, different experiences would make a person act significantly different. For me that wasnt a big deal, as long as they are absolutely recogniseable as the character, not an OC with a canon name.

For me the worst thing was when for instance Vriska was treated as simply a horrible person by everyone in the story for no reason. She was written as a blank, flat nobody and given a name that somehow makes her a monster.

The fun of AUs (for me) isn't just "how would these characters be different in another universe" it's also "what would have to happen in that universe to make them the same?"

Which, uh. Incidentally. Can I mention that I'm HUGELY defensive of Fenris and Dorian and their respective abuse histories? Because hooboy I am massively defensive of both of them, and any fic where Dorian's The Sassy Gay Friend without any mention of the cultural and familial abuse that he's specifically lashing back at with his camp attitude riles me up.

Yeah, this is p much how I feel about it. The way I see it, an AU version of a character is gonna be inherently OOC in some ways compared to their canon counterpart, but should be fundamentally the same character, if that makes any sense? And it's fascinating how circumstances can shape characters (and real people, obviously!), and it's a lot of fun to come up with different circumstances that have similar end results.

It's becoming the Cool Thing to make fun of my favorite character in WD2 and I hate it so much. Because there's this... level of dismissal about it, like, "oh you like Wrench? I bet you like [tumblrs Problematique character of the month] too you big loser" about it. Where whatever reason you might like him for is clearly better represented in another character, so you ACTUALLY like him because you're a bad person or whatever.

And I hate it. I hate that my first response to Wrench Sux LOL is to get tense and defensive and angry. I hate that I feel like I have to do a penance for liking him by drawing the other characters and only posting their art, not his. And I actually love the rest of the cast too, is the thing, but Wrench is the one that everyone dumps on when they want to get some cheap kicks in or try and boost their OTP up in the runnings.

That´s some bullshit. Wrench is an interesting, complex character. Newsflash, so is every other character in wd2, clearly you have no reason to like on more than another...oh wait.

I twigged on something else while talking about it on Discord and it's like... the people who say this shit? Still make tons of posts and gifsets about him. They just follow up these posts with "lol I hate making posts about Wrench but whatev gets notes lmao" so they can make a point that they don't actually like him, they're just doing it for the attention.

And like wow, holy shit. If you want more fandom content of your fave, make that fandom content. Don't make it for the guy you hate and then shit on his fans for being excited about getting that content too. It's just petty and mean.

So basically they're admitting to selling out. For notes.

man, it's not even hard to make content you like and get notes! i specifically make a lot of davekat because it's a ship i really like (no shit, lol) and because it's popular at the moment, which means i get that sweet validation i crave. it's not like there's nothing they could do beyond make content for a guy they apparently don't like, just go find something you do like that's popular if you want attention, what funsucking buttnuts

It just really gets to me, as if selling out is morally superior to admitting to liking a ~problematic~ character. (I don't see why Wrench is problematic anyway. Fite me.)

that reminds me of one popular undertale texting blog

they hate sans (and don't even characterize him correctly) and when asked why they write him if they don't like him, they were like, "i need to bring attention to important world issues with my blog and no one would read it without sans"

and like... dude... get the fuck over yourself, your blog is not that important

You just answered your own question: because he's apparently more popular than their own faves. :P
