I'd offer my roommate's cats up for analysis, but none of them are related and two of the three are strays with no known backstory.

Maine Coons are always such handsome cats wow.

Fergus is a harlequin cream tabby, and Madelyn is a caliby (tabby calico). In the breed standard, tabby tortoiseshells are called patched tabbies, so officially she'd be a patched tabby and white. I unfortunately can't tell what kind of tabby they are from the pictures.

Mom was red or tortoiseshell, probably the latter because red female cats are uncommon (Since a female gets a color gene from each parent, they need two copies of red to be red, and black is actually more common anyway. A cat with one copy of red and one copy of black is a tortoishell. Males only need one copy of red, so red cats are more often males.) Dad could've looked like pretty much anything! They both had some amount of white. Cream is the recessive dilute form of red, so they both were carrying the gene for dilution, or one of them was dilute and the other a carrier. If the parents were both dilute, Madelyn would also have had to been dilute! Dilute tortoiseshell is blue-and-cream.

I can tell you their colors anyway, if you like?

I don't have access to any good pictures of roommate's cats right this second, but I'll try to get some in the next few days.

What a delightful goblin. I feel like he'd offer suspect advice that would either turn out really really well or end in hilarious (to him) disaster, motivated purely by whim.

@Birdy do you want to speculate on these youtube cats

They're brother and sister, the youtuber mentions in a later video that she suspects theyre norwegian forest cats altho they were apparently advertised as maine coons by the person they were rehomed from?

If nothing else i want to share these fluffchildren with the thread (video is a vlog but contains many shots of the kitties including their tiny meows toward the end of the video)

    GOOD GOOD CHILDREN*

It's kind of hard to tell which cat is the boy and which cat is the girl from the video but I think:

Atlas is a particularly darkly marked black classic tabby bicolor whose stripes are further obscured by his long fur. Classic tabbies have a swirling pattern and are less common because the allele is recessive to the mackerel allele.

Luna is a very pretty blue mackerel tabby bicolor.

The mother was black or tortoiseshell and the father was black, and one or both of them had white markings. Long hair is also recessive, so the parents were either both carriers, one was longhaired and one was a carrier, or both were longhaired. The parents also had to be carrying classic tabby (but could not both be classic tabbies) - I'd guess they were both mackerel tabbies just because most feral cats are but who knows?

These cats definitely seem to speak more to the Norwegian Forest type than to the Maine Coon type - they have relatively short, broad heads, and short, thick legs. Maine Coons have long noses and wedge-shaped heads, and tend to be tall. These two lack the impressive neck fluff of the Norwegian Forest cat, though that's probably because they're randombreds and not real pedigree cats. Another possibility is they have Siberian ancestry, which I'm inclined to because of the upward tilt to the eyes.

Again, breeds are not my strong suit, and chances are they're just typical domestic longhairs! "Maine Coon" at a lot of adoption centers really is just code for "big fluffy cat," owing to how well-known and popular the Maine Coon breed is.

*all the cats I did analyses of are good children!!! I am ashamed I did not point this out earlier
