So Coursera is a thing. I have a lot of trouble completing online courses, but with Coursera it's free, so it's... practice, I guess? And it allows me to study things that I otherwise wouldn't have time for. Like linguistics! Which is what I'm currently taking. Fingers crossed for me actually finishing this one.

  7. So I'm reading the Wikipedia page for The Adventure Zone and what immediately comes to mind is how bizarre it is that the kids can play D&D with their dad. What kind of relationship do they have with him? What is that like? If I played D&D with my dad I'd probably never play it again out of fear.

My dad used to play Rifts, and while I never got to play WITH him he gave me a lot of advice. I actually inherited the first 15 or so books from him. We get along really well though. I'd be kind of intimidated in an actual game with him, but that's because he's got a lot experience as both player and GM and I've never played an actual campaign- I had a semi-freeform group that threw out most of the rules in favor of story. But he's not the kind of person to put unreasonable expectations on me, expect me not to be a newb compared to his gaming-longer-than-I've-been-alive ass or anything like that.

My mom and dad got me the starter edition of 3.5 but we never played with him overseas (and way more interested in tabeltops than mom or stepdad) and none of my middle school friends were interested.

My dad's told me about some of the other campaigns he's done though, lot of d20 modern and a couple WoD. If we lived closer I might be tempted to poke at getting a campaign set up with him, but he's a super chill dude who's literally only gotten mad at me like... twice that I can remember. I imagine it's the same with the McElroys because they all seem to poke fun at him without any issue in the transcripts I've read.

My mom has had a cameo character in one of my dnd campaigns once. She and my dad were visiting me at college and we were having a session and the DM said sure when I asked if they could have one off characters (She was Lady Godiva Chocolate and my dad was a fire beetle and whenever we asked him what he would do he just said "The fire beetle abides"). My mom also played Neopets with me for like 5 years and was friends with my friends on there.

... My parents are probably an outlier adn should not have been counted.

My abusive bio father even played videogames with us and stuff tho. Like that was before he started abusing me, I think? Or at least not as much. The games would be a little stressful sometimes, always worried about annoying him/making him mad, but they're still pretty good memories.

Octavia Butler's books are about surviving/adapting to things that other sci-fi treats as apocalyptic, mind-shattering violations.

HP Lovecraft: my ancestors were inhuman and alien, better set myself on fire
Octavia Butler: everyone has alien DNA now and there's no point getting sentimental about it, we have cassava to grow

Which part, arresting him? Back in my parents' day, people who stole street signs kept it secret because they knew it wasn't legal or a good idea. And they usually went with signs other than stop signs, ones a little less likely to get out-of-towners in accidents.

In the comments, someone actually linked to a case where three people were sentenced to 15 years in prison for the deaths of a group of 18 year olds because of stealing signs. They'd stolen over dozen other stop signs, but claimed they hadn't stolen the one that lead to a car full of teens to drive in front of a 18-wheeler-- either way "car full of teens driving into an 18-wheeler" seems like a really good reason to not steal stop signs.

Aaaand apparently both of these incidents (the prankster getting charged with grand theft and the deaths linked in the comments) took place in Florida. Thanks, Florida Man!
