Similarly, if noncon is acknowledged as noncon, and dubious consent situations are acknowledged as such, I'm totally there. But when it isn't, or if it's just handwaved away without a second thought, just... augh. (I'm super torn, because one of the authors I complained about at great length before has a bunch of stories just like that where I'm really on board! Their weird kinks are my weird kinks! Their favorite framing is my favorite framing! But in their big novel-length epic where I really, really should be very enthusiastically on the party train, something just... goes wrong. I can see like five directions things could be nudged to tweak the way it's presented, whether it's character's reactions or the pace of character progression, LOTS of things. But something just disconnects and instead of being a long, indulgent kink party, it's a turn-off-your-brain-and-don't-think-past-the-scene kink party. Which KILLS me, because this is not at all a common subject and how often am I going to run into this period, never mind running into it done better) Spoiler: nsfw DON'T LOOK AT ME (among other things) robot breastfeeding porn is shockingly not the most common thing out there
Some porn fics I've read are so unappealing and/or unsettling I wonder if the writers are associated with the people running the website in the creepypasta "Normal Porn for Normal People" and following the fan theory about it that they're trying to disturb people into celibacy.
I just crack up at the mental image of all these 4channers watching a dog eat sandwiches and waiting for the porn. Then it gets excellently unsettling.
It keeps happening, apparently. In this case, during a sex scene. We were cracking jokes about the author needing to warn for implied bestiality.
Oh my god is any one going to point this out to the author.... Like, the rest of it is bad but definitely the kind of bad that you just happen to encounter in that genre of fic all the time anyway, but that one seems like Honest Mistake Territory that I would very much like someone to notify me of were it mine.
Speaking of unappealing porn; writers, neither balls nor breasts are skin-sacks of liquid. They will not make sloshing sounds.
YOI Badfic Friend just came across a fic where Yuuri had a panic attack, which caused him to develop a fever, develop swollen vocal chords for no apparent reason, and made his hair spontaneously generate enough grease to stand up spiky. Then Victor found him hiding in the bathtub with a blanket over him and hugged him and he passed out. Our conclusion was that he had a severe allergic reaction to something which just happened to perfectly coincide with the panic attack.
Okay. Look, fandom. I know it's a lot of fun to play the "Character X in Film A and Character Y in Film B were both played by Actor J, what if in my fic they were the same person?" crossover game. I do it too! And yes, sometimes it's a neat way to pair up characters played by Actor J and Actor H who were in Film C together but what if all their characters were the same people and it's a whole friggin' multiverse thing, yes, I get it! But y'know, fandom, after a while I can tell you just want to see Actors J and H make out and you've stopped putting any effort into writing fic that relates at all to any of their movies and your crossovers don't make sense anymore. And that makes me sad. This alphabet soup rant brought to you by my frustration at being unable to find more than three Mysterious Skin fics that are not crossovers. YES, I GET IT, I LIKE TOM HARDY TOO, OKAY, BUT CAN WE PLEASE LEAVE HIM OUT JUST ONCE?
Wish I could find more fics where all or a lot of the cast is MOGAI/neurodivergent/not white/etc and it's relevant to their interactions with the world and interesting things actually happen. I don't want to read more or less the same boring American-high-school-romance over and over and over and over! Or fics where the protag leaves an abusive situation and finds their accepting tribe and then they do something interesting instead of sitting around being accepting at each other for chapter after chapter? I think this is a subsection of a type of fic Tumblr's relativelylessimportant has complained about a lot where the writer is so desperate to get to the happy ending that they put it in the first chapter of fifty. It would be great to live it, but it's boring as hell to read.
Cult AU update: Apparently in the latest chapter, Yuuri HIRES A HITMAN TO KILL VICTOR'S EX. This hitman requires the person who hired them to provide their own gun. I'm sort of awed at how they keep finding new and phenomenal ways to not know how anything works, and I'm not even reading the fic myself.
