Most spirits embody some quintessential emotion or ideal-- knowledge, rage, despair, compassion, desire-- and have attitudes and forms that reflect that. Demons tend to be more broadly categorized because the people summoning them don't care to find out what they think about all this nonsense.

Fascinating! I suppose you're likely not one of my demons, so it wouldn't matter either way, but I do like to know. I was almost possessed by an Envy demon, you know.

Ah. Not entirely a philosophical question, then. I'm sure there was a Unicronian cult somewhere that claimed to be able to summon His servants, but no one had quite managed to do so last I heard.

 

Oh! No, summoning spirits is quite easy in Thedas-- easier now, with the Veil as weak as it is. The Breach pulled the Fade much closer to the physical plane than it had been in millennia, which was part of the problem. Even repaired, it has so many weak points now...

But more to the point, spirits as residents of the Fade simply have more of a connection with the idea of emotion than we fleshy vessels do. I'm told that it's often quite disorienting for them when they come out of the Fade, because the physical world doesn't react to wants or dreams the way the Fade does-- it's why so many of them are traumatized enough to shift into demonic shapes.

 

Not one of yours either, though possession does sound remarkably like one of the envious. We're pure Chaos, given form. Or attached to pre-existing form, in cases such as mine. We feel things very strongly, and what humans associate with 'sin' is... -she tilts her head side to side, thinking- the breaking down of Order. If things were the way the soul chickens wanted it, if everyone was as virtuous as they were expected to be, then Order would win. So we latch on to them, ways of representing our own brand of Chaos. I'm mostly Greed, actually. But given how I fell, I'm tied rather strongly to Lust. And my boss is all Pride (which is how I managed to stay ahead of him for so long), which influences me as well.

Creation was... stress-testing the system. The Experiment was humanity: beings of free will left to it without outside influence. At least, that's how it's supposed to be. Whether Chaos was a bug that didn't get patched or the angels just didn't get the memo nobody knows, but here we are. Messing with the bounds of the experiment, being very influencing from outside, and sometimes inside when we can, and generally being a pain in everyone's ass forever.

That's quite interesting-- are Order and Chaos fundamental structures of your world, too? I don't think I've ever heard of a greed demon, but I supposed desire comes in many shapes; it's likely those demons are the ones that fill that role in my world, since they embody the wanting more than simply sexual aspects of desire.

And these, er, soul chickens? Do they have categories too? Virtues to counter yours sins?

You're either too weak or not weak enough depending on perspective. If you have to ask for services don't be stingy with the price.

The two most fundamental. Eventually, everything is supposed to fall into perfect, harmonious order. Everything in its little boxes. But somehow Chaos got in, whether intentionally or by some fluke or because one can't exist without the other.

Angels. They're angels. I just come up with more suitable names for them. They're associated in imagery with feathered wings, while modern interpretations give us leathery ones. In reality, we both can look like anything. They do have a thing about feathered wings though. And entirely too many eyes in places they don't belong. -says the girl with an extra pair on her wrists, and the painted third eye's pupil moves- They're all a lot of overgrown turkeys.

And that's what makes them so painfully dull. They don't need to organize themselves by virtues because they're all so boringly flawless by human standards. They embody as many virtues as cosmic caretakers can. Except they're missing the parts that make them- anything, really. They're empty.

 

Eurgh, the name puts me off already. I've never known a Charity I didn't want to fillet before the end of the night.

That's... odd. I suppose that it's impractical to try and align your 'angels' along the same lines I would any other spirit, but it just makes them seem a bit, well, unrealistic, don't you think? Though if they're just vessels for what others project on them, I suppose that would make sense.

Are Tranquil spirits possible? I'll have to ask Cole.

I'm also not sure how one would go about having perfect order when life itself is inherently chaotic, but that might be my experience with the Fade talking again. It's a bit hard trying to think about things outside the framework you've always known, isn't it?
