This is funny because in his mind, Ford's not attacking the system, he's trying to point out that there are more aspects to the system than Grimm has heretofore considered. The act of hunting, in particular, has more components than just the act of killing.

If Valiska sees a roach in the kitchen and stomps it, that's not hunting. If Valiska sees an assassin on the ceiling of her bedroom and shanks the fuck out of them, that's not hunting either. When Cordelia chased and caught a Roomba and got her nose burnt taking it apart, that WAS hunting, but Ford doubts that it would do Grimm much good to try and feed on that--whether that's because she's an animal, or because she didn't actually kill a living being, or some other reason.

 

Actually they are in agreement on that hilariously enough. What's muddling the waters is that Grimm could easily feed on other acts of destruction, especially destruction-for-protection they just vastly prefer hunting because of their link to wolves. So in theory they could feed on all of those and likely would consider Vali shanking an assassin in defense of her home a fairly generous payment if it was offered, it's just that there is a general ettiquette to these things about how many options a demon will offer a summoner and Grimm specifically is pretty unwilling to settle for less than their favorite offerings, because old grump wolf is pretty renown and powerful :P

 

Helios is also doing a science! It's just that his version of a science is not the same version of Ford's version of a science and he's had to dance around the "oh silly me mister Magister I am but a lowly elf slave who knows naught, only I thought that perhaps blood lotus was typically used in the summoning of rage demons...?" game while undercover in Tevinter for long enough that it's cemented his way of going about asking questions. Playing the dewy-eyed apprentice to Solas probably formed that method of questioning too, but it means that he's far less direct about his attempts at questioning.

And, of course, the Fade continues to be Bullshit.
