The remake seems to just be the gift that keeps on giving, whether you want it to or not. "Please," you beg. "Stop. This is too much." The remake just smiles and continues to shove terrible things at you.

Good, because I am SO MAD and SO GROSSED OUT.

It's like one of those "corrupt a wish" forum games got ahold of everything we have ever said about the game.
"We want a remake with an expanded art budget, multiple expressions for character portraits, and Elm to get a portrait!"
"Here you go, here's a remake with an expanded art budget and multiple character portraits, and also we changed the portrait art style so it just looks bad, didn't fix the blatant sprite errors or make the backgrounds look better, and turned every female character into a sexed-up waifubait moeblob and put in a bunch of fanservicey splash images of all of them. Yes, even the nine-year-old. Elm has a portrait and she's wearing 'Play now, my lord' bikini armor."

I don't understand what people like that get out of fiction. Like, how is it possible that they enjoy reading the same things as I do when the things they want out of a story are so fundamentally different? Why do they even like the canon at all?

Having read the issue now, I can't imagine anything MORE satisfying for those poor, unfortunate characters than these latest developments. Are they in pain? Oh my, yes. Am I excited to see that pain resolve? OH MY GOD I HAVEN'T BEEN THIS EXCITED ABOUT THE COMICS IN MONTHS

This is the best thing that could have happened, it's more painful than I would have imagined, but it made perfect sense and built flawlessly on the story we already had (long-running and short-term). I absolutely 100% cannot comprehend how someone would think this is bad storytelling. JRO isn't incompetent, he constantly, constantly leaves me in awe over what an amazing, talented, skilled author he is.

and even when it's NOT a complaints post - i just saw one that's like 'wow i'm desperately holding out hope that this isn't the end, i'm in complete denial' and like.

...really? you think that this would be a good place to end that character, that that's in line with everything the writer has done until now?

@spockandawe @KarrinBlue All I can think of is how the fandom exploded with rage about Gamzee not being killed pointlessly about one panel after he did something wrong, or someone on TVTropes' posting endless identical rants on the WMG page about Goblins' Dies Horribly when he "died" in a very very obvious cliffhanger strip.

Oh, and the recent Dr Who events with Bill, and for some reason I was reminded of "The Death of Smarm". The fic complained about did at least start with something happening but then "it took Jim and Blair twenty parts to walk about fifty feet and another twenty-five to take a shower".

i don't know what fandom you guys are talking about so i can't give specifics, but i generally don't like reading stories like that because empathising with characters who are in pain takes spoons that i just don't have.

Huh, that's an interesting essay. I mostly disagree with the overall point, on the grounds that I have been in many intensely physically and emotionally intimate relationships where pretty much nobody believed we weren't doing it.

Bad characterization and boring rehashes of similar situations are a problem with every genre. It doesn't mean it's played out. And I sort of object to the idea that patterning the behavior of men in fic on "no homo" norms for the sake of realism has to be the best way.

I dunno, it would really suck if all gen fic started trending in this direction. But surely there could be room for both? I want both.

The article was written several years ago, and seems to be pretty fandom-specific. I don't know Sentinel, so yeah. And I can see some physical affection going on, and bathing an injured person is necessary and doesn't come across as sexual, but do people of any gender really ever French-kiss people they're neither romantically nor sexually interested in as a sign of "friendship"? That seems weird to me.

I mean I have, but not often or recently, and I'm a weird person with weird friends who delighted in weirdness. So it's possible but maybe not likely.

I could buy it if it was portrayed as either being normal in the society depicted or if the characters knew it was unusual. Portraying it like this is standard when people who know the society in question know it isn't comes across a bit odd.

the most boring type of homestuck crossover is one where you make the canon chars from [the non-hs canon] into trolls, but they're all forced into the roles of the canon hs trolls.

like what's the point of making characters into trolls if you're just gonna use the canon trolls' horn shapes & mannerisms & outfits. (like you make a char into a violetblood troll and they have eridan's horn shapes and eridan's cape and eridan's obsession with romance.)

like how boring can you get

That is my least favorite kind of crossover in general. I've never had fun with "WELL NOW THIS CHARACTER IS ARAGORN" because why? Then it's not the character I love and it's also not Aragorn and you're playing it so safe to the canon that you just have no fucking fun with the setting itself. I don't fucking care about the plot of Lord of the Rings. I care about the world of Lord of the Rings. Make new stories in Arda!

Why is like 85% of what I find in the YJ fandom negativity of one kind or another. Am I just looking at the wrong people. It's gotten to the point where I don't trust ANYONE who isn't exclusively gifsets or art because otherwise it's a guarantee they'll have some long involved posts about their pet grudge. Especially when their main problems are easily solved within the show text or with 'sometimes characters mess up. This is a good thing.'

Like I know critical analysis is important but FUCK it is so much harder to find anything that's just 'wow this is a thing I liked' or 'I wonder what's going on here' or 'I like to headcanon this' than 'waaa my favorite character was stabbed by everyone and then turned into a raving asshole and then left out of the plot.' Doesn't anyone who watches LIKE the show, instead of apparently watching it to find something to be angry about?

There's this one popular kingdom hearts/spirited away crossover that's basically just Spirited Away: Gay Sex Edition. Roxas and Axel are copypasted into the roles of Chihiro and Haku, and then they bone. It's fucking annoying from a writing standpoint (could have done so many cool things with that universe!!) and also leaves a bad taste in my mouth because I did not expect it to get as explicit as it did, and while I'm generally all for exploring more adult themes in kids' media, spirited away is just not supposed to be sexy. Urgh. Euuuurgh. No, not for me, no thank you.

Oh hey someone else for who those films are noes for with sex. It's funny because normally I am a huge pervert, but with Miyazaki films I just nope. Nope nope nope.

I think it's really fun to put characters into roles from different canons, but keeping the core of the characters the same is more important than keeping everything from the roles you shove them into.

One of my favourite things to do that with is Red Dwarf, and I'd probably do it way less if I felt like it was absolutely necessary to have one character who's a senile computer or another who's descended from someone's pet. I think one didn't even have the hologram character, because that felt like the best way to integrate the fandom I was thinking of.
