Hey, do any of you know much about the RPG Maker games/"programs"?

 

I know a good bit, yeah. What do you need help with? (If it's scripting though I'm hopeless.)

 

I was wondering why I never got into the Vorkosigan books when I was younger, because they're the sort that I liked then (and still do).

Then I saw the old covers.

 

@Lazarae scripting would be some of what I need help with eventually. The newest version of RPG maker is on the steam summer sale and part of me wants to get it because every once in a while I want to make my own rpg. But I'm very bad at finishing projects so it's probably a dumb idea.

 

I was thinking of getting it myself, even though I never finish my own projects.

If you look around online there are forums full of resources, either learning how to script or whole scripts you can use so long as you give credit. Sadly I haven't poked the community in a few years so I'm not sure which are still active. (Also the ones I have saved are for VX/VX Ace).

Honestly half my enjoyment mucking around in the RPG Makers is playing with the resources people put out so I never feel too bad about not finishing projects. I was going to make a Yume Nikki fangame and got a lot farther than usual (I actually planned shit out!) but I ran into the small problem of wanting to do all my own art for it and the horrible combo of my art being shit and having so many tilesets I wanted to do.

 

I can't art, period. If I do it I'm using the stock resources and that's it.

 

If you feel limited by the RTP but want to keep the style (because that's easiest) you can search for "RTP match" or "RTP style" and you'll find a lot of people making new stuff with the same look. For XP and VX/Ace there were also a couple... I'd call them visual overhauls of it was an actual game and not a game maker. Different styles that got picked up and people added new content to that completely replaced the RTP. First Seed was one, I forget the others. (Not counting the ones you can buy, the high-fantasy one, Mythos, Modern Tiles) It's totally possible to make a game fully from either RTP stuff or stuff people put out there for use. (I saved the files with the artist's name so I didn't have to keep a separate file for credits.)

 

Mostly I just need to learn to script and design maps. and how to balance combat encounters.

that was rpgmaker vx ace, i havent worked with the newest version. there's new stuff in there and i don't know how much changed in comparison to vx ace. i know it's running on javascript instead of ruby.

 

Not running on ruby? No SU fan games, then...
