@esotericPrognosticator just fyi, honor is always gonna have her shield unless she's wielding her (two-handed) crossbow, if that kind of delineation is okay (otherwise i can specify when she's got her shield and when she doesn't!)

She's generally going to be using her shield unless otherwise specified, yeah. I'll try to be better on reminding.

Er, the javelin is a melee weapon, just with the thrown property. It's part of why I went for them, along with Salt being able to make more. Though she also has her bite attack, and now I'm wishing I'd gone with that to get the temporary hp. Oh well, that's what I get for scripting too far in advance.

Yup! It was a twice-translated pun, of sorts. She's saying "you're under arrest" but since she wasn't familiar with the concepts she's using a rather literal translation back, leading to "you will be restrained (arrest) below (under)". It's a bit of an error, that I might go and fix, because she's supposed to be more present-focused than future-focused, linguistically. But yeah. Jokes!

...I absolutely, totally did. Let me go fix that.

Pre-edit: Random has taken pity on me, and thrown an 18 my way. I must not forget advantage. Advantage is the saviour of all things.

Fair! It's my first PbP game, wasn't sure how much info would be useful/necessary.

this is my first play-by-post game as well, so let me know if i should be posting more/less info. i have my IC post just about ready, only i'm not sure whether i should hold off until we see what happens re: salt's retaliation against the halfling. i mean. i got a 9 on my initiative, so would honor's attack come before salt's? (i mean i know that's how it works in regular dnd i just don't know what the protocol is here) (but also i rolled p low on my attack roll so it probably wouldn't matter, except that if salt's attack comes first and salt kills the halfling, it would be silly for honor to also attempt to attack the halfling.......)

Learned my lesson. Initiative first, next time. Also, remember advantage. Sorry, all!

...oh, yeah. with only a 9 init, should i just hold off on the attacking & just post my IC post + init?

me: clearly any weapon with a range is solely used for ranged attacks
me: wait isn't a javelin a good stabby thing anyway
    me: lol whatever
it doesn't matter now, actually, 'cause your higher initiative roll means you can go first and make the ranged attack, but. I won't forget that again, I assure you. :P

yeah I was thinking "below" as in underworld but
poorly translated jokes are excellent! pray continue to make them!

I mean. I'm surprised I remembered it, I had to go and read your character sheet. my experience of 5e rangers is limited to Vex from Critical Role, and she uses the core rules, not the revised, so she doesn't do that...

nah, you're good with what you posted. :) also I'd like you to do what you did with to-hit rolls, i.e., post them even if they're shitty, 'cause you never know. :P

hmm. well, this is sort of an unusual situation, 'cause you guys are kinda opting into combat—normally I'd ask you all to roll initiative before anything else happened, but yeah. uhhh, and if you know your initiative is higher than everyone else's go ahead and post (often you won't know because I won't've posted your opponents' initiative rolls yet, but in that case I'll just tell you you're up), and likewise if you know it's lower than someone's, wait for their attack to resolve before you post IC (i.e., roll initiative before you start posting).

also, if any of you were wondering—OOC stuff in the IC thread ought to be mechanical stuff, with any questions here. additionally, if I ask anyone to roll an ability check, I'd like you to post your results here rather than IC.

edit: also, @garden, did you remember to add +3 to your damage and just rolled reaaaally shitty on your damage dice? it's completely irrelevant here, but you don't have damage bonuses listed on your character sheet, and I know if I didn't have those, I would never remember them ever. :P

I thiiiink the listed XP for defeated foes is awarded to each character, not split amongst them, but I don't have my stupid hard copy of the Dungeon Master's Guide, and I'm not 100% certain?? halp

@garden Salt is probably going to keep on fighting if Honor doesn't run, assuming more help isn't forthcoming. Also, you're up before her on initiative next. So it's up to you (or anyone else who wants to get in on the fighting) either way.

Given how badly we look to be outnumbered, Marian's probably going to head for the nearest defensible, non-flammable building, which is the grange. (The keep is less than ideal because of the giant dragon attacking it.)

I don't want to post multiple times in a row until the rest of the group has been introduced, though, if it matters.

@esotericPrognosticator nah, XP awarded for defeated enemies is split between the party members. I think it's DMG 82.

@The Frood Abides I don't think it does matter that much? I mean, there are a lot of you, so that might take a while. as long as Marian doesn't advance much beyond the initial-reaction-to-the-attack phase so other people don't have to catch up too much chronologically, I think you're good. she could also deliberately seek out members of the group who haven't acted yet without inferring with their debuts too much. buuut that's just me saying I wouldn't object; 's all good if you still don't want to post.

lol I did screw up! classic me honestly but thanks for nipping the mistake in the bud. :)

ALSO GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT I have extensively renovated the first post of the thread! it has a lot of my rules/preferences/modī operandōrum listed (although I've already expressed the majority of them in this thread—most of it's just consolidation), if you'd like to take a look.
edit: now with ironically terrible title!

furthermore @Helen of Boy I am firmly convinced that Salt has one of those stereotypical "In Soviet Russia" accents. I am not sure why, but I wanted to share. also this an excellent opportunity for optional character-enrichment via giving them all accents that may or may not be terrible!! also you could ask other people for suggestions!!! I am unaccountably psyched about this!!!

Marian for poorly rendered "cockney" accent where people put "innit" at the end of every statement
...or a really thick Scottish one that has things like "cannae" and "puir wee birdie" everywhere, à la Terry Pratchett

Auralee for one of those Irish accents people do when they are pretending to be leprechauns 'cause the Land of Story and Song amiright (also I decided arbitrarily that Elvish is a Celtic language, probably Gaelic in this case)

Thunder for shitty pirate accent with all the trappings or maybe like a member-of-the-British-navy-during-the-Napoleanic-Wars-which-is-to-say-either-disgustingly-posh-for-an officer-or-rough-as-hell-for-a-deckhand type thing

Honor for that accent in like The Godfather and/or a Al Capone sort of thing. the important part is that she sounds like she's in the mafia

aaaand I'm out but that was really fun guys I almost did it all in caps

also I want to stress that you are in no way obligated to choose an accent or to render it phonetically 'cause that's a massive pain in the ass but yeah

@NevermorePoe sure! to clarify, do you just want Vitae to attack a random group of cultists, or go over and attack with Honor and Salt, or? in either case I'd like you to roll initiative, please (d20 + your Dexterity modifier).

I FORGOT A THING @Helen of Boy Salt knows that the guardsmen have general orders to make for the keep if the town is attacked by a large force, in the interest of siegecraft and because the soldiers proper at the keep would definitely appreciate the help from additional trained fighters. no one really considered what would happen if a dragon attacked the keep, but those are the orders nonetheless. the force at the keep would appreciate anyone else she could bring in who's handy in a fight, even if they aren't part of the town's forces, and the general point of a siege means that she's supposed to herd as many hapless townspeople into the keep as she can manage. they'll be safer there than they would be running around like chickens with their heads cut off. :P

Sounds good. Might have her herd them toward the grange instead (because of other characters, and not being dragon'd), do a fighting retreat sort of thing. Don't think I'll have cropped up in the initiative order again yet, so I'll hold off on posting until either it's back around to me, or just later tonight.

One question: you mentioned more mooks moving toward Salt, and her having disadvantage on the escape check because she's closer. Either of them in melee range, by chance?

EDIT: Nevermind, you mentioned crucial seconds away. Still, want to make sure if they are or not before Salt begins to retreat, for more than just avoiding AoO reasons.

EDIT 2: Her not having advantage, rather. I'm gonna go make some tea and try to actually wake up.

general note: the dragon is actually not doing much! I mean, he's a giant-ass monster and thus adding substantially to the confusion and aura of Terror (cf. the Frightful Presence action in the Monster Manual), but he hasn't used his breath weapon on anyone yet, nor made any physical attacks. he's kinda just flying in desultory circles, roaring occasionally.

correction! she doesn't have disadvantage, she just doesn't have advantage. straight check, in other words. and no, they are not; currently they're about 40 ft away, and if she were to stop to make a ranged attack, they'd have time to close to melee range shortly thereafter.
