newbie question: Can I cast two spells in one round, and if I can, is it inadvisable to do so?

here's an online dice roller you can use; I find that rolling your own dice is one of the most exciting things about D&D!

I'll say that you'll just be at the bottom of the round in terms of initiative, which means you take your turn now and can't act again until Salt and the cultist have both acted. (normally you'd roll initiative, which is a d20 plus your Dexterity bonus, and that would determine when your turn is.)

next you roll to hit (also called an attack roll). that's another d20 plus your proficiency and Strength bonuses, which in your case is +2.

that roll tells me whether or not your attack hits, but the way we're playing, I'd like you to always roll for damage, even if you don't end up actually causing it. I think you're using your quarterstaff with both hands, which means you roll a d8 and add your Strength modifier. but your Strength modifier is 0, so you'll just roll the d8. does that all make sense to you?

no worries, we only started a couple days ago. :) and no, you don't have to if you think she's playable, which she miiiight be? I mean, you have all your ability scores, so if you think you can sort your spell modifiers and such, you can jump into combat just fine.

edit: SHIT I FORGOT ABOUT SPELL ATTACKS I'll explain those in a moment, @NevermorePoe. :)

You can only cast one spell of 1st level or higher per round, and most spells are actions, of which you can only take one per round. If there is a spell that takes a bonus action, you can cast that, and a cantrip (weak, at-will spell) that takes an action, on the same round.

So the answer is "yes, but only under very specific circumstances," and "depends on the situation," in that order.

simple answer: not usually. most spells that are meant to be used in combat have a casting time of 1 action (you can see that information in those little spell description blocks). that means you could only cast one of those in a round. some spells take less time, but I don't think you have any of those prepared, so you don't have to worry about that right now.

as for inadvisability: right now you can only cast two spells (proper spells, not cantrips) a day, so you might not want to burn through them that fast. it's up to you, though.

@The Frood Abides I didn't know that about only being able to cast two spells if one of them is a cantrip? I guess I didn't read the Spellcasting chapter closely enough. this is what I get for assuming Critical Role does everything right. :P (Vex casts two spells a round a lot, the cheater.)

@esotericPrognosticator Critical Role has two big houserules on action economy I can think of; if you cast two spells in a round, one has to be 2nd-level or lower (as opposed to a cantrip), and drinking a potion or administering one to another person is a bonus action (RAW has it as an action).

OH RIGHT SPELL ATTACKS uh @NevermorePoe combat spells mostly work the same way. you always have to roll initiative, and some spells tell you to make a spell attack roll, which is like your physical attack roll: a d20 plus your proficiency bonus plus your Wisdom modifier, which in total would be d20 + 5 for you. and you roll damage according to the spell description's instructions; you don't add any other bonuses.

some spells say that creatures have to make some kind of saving throw; all you need to know about that is that your save DC is 13. I'll handle the rest of that saving throw stuff. does that all make sense?

Healing Word > Cure Light Wounds because of that cantrip + bonus action spell combob, your magely sorts can still dream to do something besides healbotting.

@The Frood Abides I like that spell-level thing a lot (it doesn't screw over paladins and rangers, for one thing), but the potion administration always seemed a little OP. like, if it takes an action to cast cure wounds, why can you get bottled cure wounds in a bonus action?? no!!

...I do like the spell thing, though. I think I'll go look at cast-in-bonus-action spells and ponder...

well, i did that wrong then, can you reroll and show how you did it for me in this thread?

@NevermorePoe it was pretty close! mostly you just didn't make the attack roll.
alright, so as I said, you're already good as far as initiative goes, so no need to roll for that. (you did have to roll a d20, but you have to add your Dexterity bonus, too.)
next you've got the spell attack roll: 12 (what I rolled on the d20) + 5 (your spellcasting ability modifier) = 17 total.
and you don't add any bonuses to spell damage, so it'd just be the d8 roll you already made: 7 damage.

did I explain that all okay? spells are tricky, and there are a lot of different ways you might have to deal with them, so please don't hesitate to ask for help with spellcasting again. :)
