Lissa's life might have been easier if she hadn't married a fanboy. On the other hand ... if he hadn't been who he was he would never have met her. So.

She basically has all the problems associated with being a fairly conventionally cute (aside from her ears, which at first most people assume aren't real, and with her clothes on) woman who is openly and avowedly sexual without apology, and on top of that she looks a lot like an anime trope. Fun, right?

 

basically, church virtually didn't have a life prior to waking up in blood gulch (and the life before that belonging to him, not the director, consisted of being tortured to make him fragment into new ais), and though he has memories of the director's life (the man who's brain he was literally copied from), they are pretty unclear - clear enough that he has remnants of allison/tex and the director's feelings for her, and that he could trick himself into tricking he had a childhood before he knew he was an ai and pull up little details - on a lot of stuff.

so basically, he's kinda like @Norm the Genie, experience-wise, on some social stuff. like, "yes, you totally make friends by hating them and insulting them and then going on epic adventures and eventually learning to like them and you just keep insulting them all the way through. yes, that is exactly how socializing works." social ineptitude beyond simple social ineptitude.

 

Honestly I just suggest letting Lissa chill out and get over it. She might actually be interested in this information at some later point in time. I noticed she already sorta thinks of him as being emotionally immature and in dire need of socialisation, but she's also still way overstimulated from looking forward to a porn MSTing marathon, then being insulted and then getting triggered. What Church said would have pissed her off regardless of context, but it was his pure dumb luck that he said it shortly before hearing what happened to Updraft triggered the shit out of her, and as long as her mental state is even slightly compromised Rev Ford will be nothing but 100% protective/defensive of her. They'll get over it if you let them alone for a while.

Ideally someone will bring up something silly soon, or the mis will get all over her (she has fish again), or she'll get the idea that she doesn't have to be mad in the rave and should go smoke a bowl. She's 200% easier to distract from a topic than Valiska is.

Honestly? I regularly have to check their names. There´s some behaviour clues but they´re still enough the same person that the details don´t necessarily parse for someone who doesn´t know then too well unless you look closely.
(That and i honestly suspect some robots are as human faceblind as some humans are robot faceblind. Humans after all are very smol to your average transformer.)

 

That's interesting--their faces aren't the real difference between them visually, it's the fact that one of them is covered in clothes and hair and the other one isn't.

Edited: Of course they look alike to the Transformers, because they're so tiny. And yet humans seem to mix them up more often than Transformers do. I just think that their clothing, body art, hair and makeup makes them really not look very similar on human scale.

 

Lissa is now concerned. She is top catte no doubt, but that was a serious threat display even if the person/s it was aimed at (Updraft's abusers) wasn't present. It's not the sort of thing a Talassani male who enjoys submitting to queens either casually or on a serious basis would expect to see pointed at him from his partner. She has boundaries and she's not missing her party to talk with Church about a relationship that isn't currently happening, but she will want to go over this before he gets involved in what sounds like another terrible no-good bad thing. Because people she likes enough to dominate shouldn't be afraid of her unless they're playing at it for fun, and they should never really think that she might actually kill them. (Sure there was a time when she was out to get Ford on a mission, but...that stopped when she got involved with him, and at that point in time she wasn't as in control of the relationship between them as she is, later.)

 

yeah, it is concerning. church is pretty used to getting serious threat displays from his partner, and he hasn't really realized yet that it means something's wrong. i think he just assumes that serious threat displays are what women do. and ford's success at keeping lissa calm confuses him, since he pretty much almost never was that successful with tex and when he was, it typically took a lot of effort/bargaining/whatever on his part.

 

YEAH NO THAT'S NOT OKAY.

A Talassani (of any gender) might see a generalised threat display like that from their partner, but in a healthy relationship it won't be directed at them in particular unless the partner has PTSD and has accidentally been triggered.

A threat display is a way for an animal, sapient or otherwise, to communicate one of two things:

1) You are encroaching on my boundaries/territory or threatening me/my mate/my offspring, and if you continue to advance, I WILL defend myself. A thylacine's gaping yawn is a threat display, and a photographer who ignored it became the only extant fully documented, verifiable case of a person ever to be attacked who had not been attacked first. (The thylacine bit him in the ass. His dignity was the only real casualty. A threat display does not necessarily mean that you're going to be mortally wounded; animals and people who are not out of their minds with rage or scared for their very lives do make decisions about how violent they'll be and escalate if you don't back down!) It's not actually a sign that an animal wants to fight--if an animal (including a human or other sapient) wants to fight, they'll just attack you. It's a sign that you need to STOP THAT RIGHT NOW because the animal feels unsafe.

2) I'm completely overstimulated, possibly even triggered, freaked out and upset and need space to compose myself. Catte.exe has stopped and will restart in Totally Unsafe Mode if you try to debug or restart it before shutdown completes. We've seen that a few times in WT. Right after the Shack burned and she realise the gravity of the stunt that Dipper had pulled and that the Falls was fucked and they couldn't go back, Valiska froze up like that. Ford brought her down from it because he understands her very well, but for anyone other than him and now Sev, it would be a dangerous move, and even they know to avoid touching her spine or startling her when she's like that.

Frequent threat displays in a relationship are a major red flag in Talassani relationships. Using a threat display to get your way when you don't actually feel threatened is a severe form of emotional blackmail, since you're basically terrorising your partner/s into giving you your way. Being threatened enough to actually legitimately need to put up a threat display in a relationship more than very occasionally in response to a trigger...well, that one's kind of obvious.

 

yeah, i basically figured that. and church is used to getting the emotional blackmail version of threat displays from his partner, the kind where she doesn't feel threatened by him (and/or his friends) and just wants him (and/or his friends) to do what she wants (which can vary from starkly practical stuff and save the world stuff to stopping them from just being an idiot/annoying her).

 

I'm not sorry for that AU version of Marcus. I'm not sorry at all.

 

Be prepared for Lissa to hide behind both Wrench and Ford and the other Marcus if he says one goddamn word about neko-musume. Or possibly explode :p I'm ok with all of this tho.
