@cassikat aaah I'm so glad my thread inspired you to make a moodboard??? It looks amazing! Also yay for Davekat, the board is perfect for them! (I will make a beta kids one eventually I will)

@dky Very nice! I love the blood in the snow + sword, is your oc a wolf or a dragon?

@keltka I'm very interested to see them eventually!

These are really nice! Do you want some advice on how to make even nicer ones, though? (Not trying to criticize, just as a future reference thing.)

SO! I'll probably try and make a graphic guide at some point, because it turns out it's really hard to get across concepts like this in writing and a lot of this would probably be wayyyyy easier shown than told, but I hope this helps for now. :)

The big thing I noticed with yours is that the images are of varying sizes and dimensions, and not evenly spaced. Unfortunately, this doesn't always add up to something eye-catching--a consistent layout will take you a long way. I personally do the 3x3 grid thing, but I've seen some different layouts (especially two-column ones, like these Rick And Morty ones) that are quite fetching as well! I find it helps to have a set size in mind first, so you can just crop all the images to that specific size. My moodboards are made at 900x900, with the component images all being 300x300, but it's worth experimenting to find out what sizes and layouts are easiest and most fun for you!

The other thing that I try to keep in mind is a cohesive color scheme of some sort--I generally go for colors heavily associated with a character in some way, either thematically/motif-wise somehow or just prominently featured in their designs (such as gray and bright red for the Karkat one, or pink for the Steven one). This one can be surprisingly tricky, and I often end up editing the colors of pictures before adding them to my moodboards to make them work better with each other. If you're using a photo manipulation program that lets you edit hue and saturation and such per layer (Photoshop is what I use and it does this by default, idk about other photo editors), that's really helpful, because you can adjust the components while also being able to see them in their intended places.

Speaking of intended places, I try to keep my moodboards fairly balanced in terms of busyness and coloration. Not symmetrical necessarily, but balanced nicely. I should note that this is something I had a lot of trouble with early on, haha! Again, layers are a lifesaver here--you can move the components around individually and change placement and such!

It's also nice, if you're doing a square moodboard, to have a middle image that ties everything together, but I think that's largely a personal preference thing on my end. (If I'm gonna have a bit of Aesthetic Text, I generally put it in the middle square.)

I hope all that made some degree of sense, and I especially hope that I didn't come across too harsh! I'm not trying to put down your work at all (I like both the ones you posted quite a lot, especially that second one!), just offering suggestions to make it even better.

also wanted to ramble a bit about how I make moodboards, since I approach it a little differently! i am frequently working on a chromebook where I am limited to whatever webapps I can find, so things like adjusting hues is not gonna fly, and I personally really love the look of different sized images as long as they grid to a certain point. I'm really fond of collecting things with a similar color theme on a pinterest board, and then uploading the images to a blank template on gomoodboard.com, where I've spent a lot of time trial-and-error figuring out how to arrange them so they all lay well together in the end. I could probably crop images so they all match up the same size, but I honestly like the composition challenge of working with irregular pieces.

Ye my first moodboards were done on gomoodboard too, and i was using an incompatible device as well so the whole time the site was going "haha fuck you" whenever i tried to do anything with precision. They would have probably come out the same if i did them properly though haha

Here's one for the game Long Live the Queen. It's kinda rough because I couldn't figure out how to crop the pictures right in gimp, or get them to be symmetrical.
