Spoiler: See I do think Ford doesn't have a lot of common sense, and he was sure giving the IMPRESSION of being kindly and absent-minded in that episode. But he was actively telling Dipper to use a mind control device on Stan. That's not okay, at all, and even if it was a lack of 'common sense' that lead to that that's a horrifyingly negligent level?
Spoiler: i finally watched the episode and I have opinions I guess it could be a mixture of Ford having literally zero common sense and somethign else, but it can't just be him lacking common sense. It takes more than lack of common sense to leap from 'my brother is gonna ruin his mayoral campaign' to 'let's give twelve year olds a mind control device and tell them to use it on my brother'. like seriously. He must have run into something that fucked up his moral compass blue-orange style.

Oh, man, "stan is not what he seems" came out before it was confirmed Stanford was a thing, so I'd never thought to apply it to him instead of Grunkle Stan, now I'm all excited. You know, I wonder if this thing where people seem to forgive Ford too easily, maybe like him too fast, I wonder if that's related to the no-shadow-not-what-he-seems point. Even more excited! It's a strong theory that Bill was terrorising Ford before he got sucked into another dimension, so I'm looking forward to seeing them meet.
