That of course complicates things massively and makes a lot things make more sense I guess.
Shit it's probably insensitive to ask what extend of in captivity we're talking about huh? Because my first thought was an island or something with enough room for people to not feel imprisoned but still far away from people they'd cause harm to. Kinda like Australia, but not actually a place that already had a population. And artificial island wouldn't be halfway impossible if enough governments contributed probably.

Can't exactly help high security in-mates if they just walk out. It's called high security for a reason.

Can't force people to get help for their problems at all. If they're breaking out, they're already not too cooperative with the doctors.

 

Ford grins. "Technically, Jordi is not getting my grandniblings drunk, he's letting him do it themselves while he talks to us."

 

"Well, this guy was human, this happened on Earth--but there's always gonna be a part of me that thinks the bastard's gonna die anyway if I send him to jail and it's honestly probably true, in some cases, isn't it? But if you were trying to build a prison on my species' homeworld...we just don't do them, you see." Lissa smiles in spite of herself. "The people who can be convinced that they need treatment, we send them to temples to stay and be treated, and when they leave the grounds they're tracked and made to wear identifying garments. But otherwise...we kind of have to kill them. Sometimes we let the families of the people they've murdered do it."

 

Some people are too dangerous to be given a choice in the matter, you know that just as well as I do.

But it's not just a single person's decision, right? That's the point. If it's a single person's decision, that comes with all the potential biases and failures in judgement from a single person. We help to catch criminals so that they can be forced to face a justice.

 

"That really depends," Lissa says. "In the deserts of ai-Talas, sometimes it's just the queen of a pride and her swords, acting to defend the pride. On Sireni, I believe, the priests and priestesses tend to be involved. But we don't have an elaborate judicial system like humans on Earth do."

 

Not saying they should be loose on the street or nothing. But if Arkham is just a bin to keep the crazies in, be honest about it. Has anyone ever been rehabilitated there and properly released?

 

"I understand the need for containment," Ford says, "but I'm unsure that I believe you can help people much without their consent and cooperation, unless it's a purely neurochemical problem. When it's containment, it shouldn't be dressed up as therapy."

 

-Naft frowns REALLY hard at this. Like, it looks like her face is melting a bit before she pulls it back in.-

I don't think- that isn't fair.

 

"She's an alien, and from an alien society. Sometimes you forget that, and then it hits you square in the face." Stan smiles.

"Life ain't fair though." Stan frowns. "Be a whole lot different if it was, don't you think?"

 

But why does unfair have to mean unfair to us? Nobody else is willing to take any responsibility! We can't help being dangerous, but people aren't willing to, to work with us on it, it's all, 'oh well, guess you all have to die now, babies first'!

-She snarls.-

 

I mean, he's not, but he's also much older than I.

"That is really not what I was talking about," says Stan, and scratches his head.

 

Then what were you talking about? Some platitude about life not being fair?

 

I'm not going to tell your people how they have to run their society, that's pretty far outside the job description for me. But you also understand my position, right? And since humans don't die in captivity from just that in general, I'm going to be very firm about no one killing out of their own motivation in my town. And I'm not particularly amused about people doing it elsewhere.

I try not to meddle with the facility too much outside of interrogations and returning in-mates that broke out from there. How it's run isn't my responsibility, whihc you also know.

Look, Mister, I'll freely admit that psychotherapy isn't exactly inside my expertise, just as much as I'm not a judge. Most metas that turn to crime in Gotham end up there because there is something provably wrong iwth their heads. A lot of experts attempt to help them. It also happens to be the highests ecurity facility in the region so some people will be there for the safety of other criminals despite not being in need of the therapeutic services.
[His eyes dart over to Jason for a split second.]

I'm not talking about someone who is potentially dangerous to people, I'm talking about someone who has, of their own free will, caused destruction and pain and is completely unwilling to see the wrong in what they're doing.

 

Destruction and pain to who?

 

"I am older than Lissa, but neither of you seem to mind. The other thing, though, that's a terrible joke." Ford lifts an eyebrow at Jordi.

 

"I think what's confusing me is how the hell we were supposed to know you were talkin' about somethin' specific to you, and not, say, the Joker. Right?"

Stan glances at Batman. "I mean, if you've got Batman, you gotta have the Joker, right? Since you don't just kill him, like I would if I was you."
